New York, June 2025 — In a landmark moment for Indian cuisine on the global stage, Chef Vijay Kumar, executive chef and partner at Semma restaurant in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, has been named the winner of the 2025 James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York State. The prestigious accolade, widely regarded as the "Oscars of the food world," recognizes outstanding culinary talent and marks Kumar as the first chef from an Indian restaurant to receive this honor in the category.

The James Beard Foundation announced the winners on June 16, 2025, during its annual awards ceremony. Kumar's victory highlights his innovative approach to South Indian cuisine, particularly the bold, regional flavors of Tamil Nadu, which he brings to life at Semma. Opened in 2021 as part of the Unapologetic Foods group (co-founded by Roni Mazumdar and Chintan Pandya), Semma has earned widespread acclaim, including a Michelin star—the only one currently held by an Indian restaurant in New York City—and a No. 1 ranking on The New York Times' list of the city's best restaurants earlier in 2025.

Hailing from a small village near Madurai (with some sources noting roots near Dindigul) in Tamil Nadu, India, Kumar's journey reflects a deeply personal connection to his heritage. He draws inspiration from farm life, family kitchens, and traditional Tamil rituals rarely showcased outside South India. Dishes at Semma feature uncompromising regional ingredients and layered, powerful flavors, transforming what Kumar once felt hesitant about in his early career into a celebrated cuisine that resonates internationally.

"This is such an honor," Kumar said in a CBS New York interview following the win. The award not only celebrates his technical skill and creativity but also signifies a broader cultural milestone, elevating Tamil and South Indian fare in fine dining.

Semma's website proudly displays the honor: "Best Chef: New York State 2025" alongside its other accolades. The restaurant, whose name means "fantastic" in Tamil slang, continues to be one of the hardest reservations in New York, drawing diners eager to experience its unapologetic expression of heritage Southern Indian cuisine.

Kumar's achievement follows fellow Unapologetic Foods partner Chintan Pandya's own Best Chef: New York State win in 2022, underscoring the group's influence in redefining Indian cuisine in America.

The James Beard Awards, established to honor excellence in the culinary arts, recognize chefs, restaurants, and industry professionals across various categories. Kumar's win places him among an elite group and signals growing mainstream appreciation for diverse global cuisines in the U.S. food scene.

Congratulations to Chef Vijay Kumar on this historic and well-deserved recognition!
