In a momentous stride towards modernizing public transport, the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) today inaugurated the much-anticipated Pink Line, a 18-kilometer elevated corridor connecting key suburbs from Hi-Tech City to Raidurg via Gachibowli and the Financial District. Revanth Reddy and Union Urban Development Minister, marks a critical milestone in Phase 2 of the metro expansion, promising to alleviate the city's notorious traffic snarls and boost connectivity for over 5 lakh daily commuters.
The Pink Line, featuring 14 state-of-the-art stations including tech hubs like Mindspace and Waverock, was rolled out with a ceremonial first ride at 6 AM from the newly revamped Hi-Tech City station. By easing the commute for IT professionals and students, we're unlocking productivity worth billions," Reddy declared during the ribbon-cutting at the Gachibowli Stadium interchange, where the line seamlessly links with the existing Blue Line.
Operational since dawn, the line has already clocked over 20,000 passengers in the first few hours, with fares starting at ₹10 for short hops and peaking at ₹60 for end-to-end journeys. Equipped with driverless trains sourced from Alstom, the corridor boasts advanced features like AI-powered crowd management, solar-paneled roofs for energy efficiency, and women-only coaches during peak hours. The project, part of the ₹14,000 crore Phase 2 blueprint approved in 2023, faced delays due to land acquisition hurdles and the COVID-19 aftermath but accelerated under the current administration's push for deadline adherence. Construction, which kicked off in mid-2022, involved innovative elevated viaducts over the Outer Ring Road to minimize disruptions. "We've invested in sustainable tech, reducing carbon emissions by 40% compared to road travel for the same route," highlighted HMRL MD N.V.S. Reddy, crediting public-private partnerships with L&T Metro Rail for on-time delivery.
Traffic experts predict a 30% dip in congestion along the Nehru Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch, a notorious bottleneck for the city's 1.2 crore vehicles. Data from the Telangana Traffic Police corroborates early wins: average speeds on parallel roads jumped 15% post-launch, with real-time apps showing smoother flows towards the airport corridor. The line's integration with the upcoming Airport Metro extension, slated for 2027, will further knit Hyderabad's western flanks into a seamless network.
Yet, not all is smooth sailing.
