Prayagraj, India – August 26, 2025 – In a groundbreaking development that could reshape the global automotive industry, Shailendra Kumar Singh Gaur, an Allahabad University alumnus from Prayagraj, has unveiled a six-stroke internal combustion engine that delivers an unprecedented mileage of 176–200 kilometers per liter (KMPL) while producing near-zero pollution. After 18 years of relentless research and personal sacrifice, Gaur’s innovation, tested on a 100cc TVS bike, promises to revolutionize fuel efficiency and sustainability across vehicles ranging from motorcycles to ships. The Journey of Innovation

Shailendra Gaur, a B.Sc. graduate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from Allahabad University (1983), embarked on this ambitious project in 2007, turning down a job offer from Tata Motors to pursue independent research. A native of Kanpur now residing in Jhunsi, Prayagraj, Gaur converted his rented home into a laboratory, selling his family’s farmland, house, and shops to fund his work, as reported by News Himachali (). Over 18 years, he collaborated with experts like Professor Anuj Jain at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) for six months and conducted research at IIT-BHU, honing his understanding of engine mechanics.

Gaur’s dedication culminated in the development of a six-stroke engine, a significant leap from the conventional four-stroke engines that dominate the automotive market. Unlike traditional engines, which utilize about 30% of fuel energy, Gaur’s design achieves up to 70% energy efficiency by incorporating two additional strokes—extra expansion and exhaust phases—that enhance fuel atomization and reduce heat loss (Organiser.org,). This innovation not only boosts mileage but also minimizes carbon emissions, addressing India’s pressing air pollution crisis.

Technical Breakthrough

The six-stroke engine’s core innovation lies in its adjustment of the engine’s thrust angle from 25 degrees in conventional engines to 60 degrees, allowing for more efficient energy utilization  Gaur tested the prototype on a 2017-model 100cc TVS bike, achieving a staggering 176 KMPL, with the bike running for 35 minutes on just 50 ml of petrol, compared to 12.4 minutes for the same bike with a standard engine . Gaur claims that with additional funding, the engine could reach 200 KMPL, a feat that would drastically reduce fuel consumption 

The engine’s versatility is another standout feature. It is designed to operate on multiple fuels, including petrol, diesel, CNG, and ethanol, making it adaptable to various vehicle types, from two-wheelers to buses, trucks, and marine vessels . Gaur’s design also produces negligible carbon monoxide and other pollutants, aligning with India’s Bharat Stage VI emission norms and global sustainability goals 

Testing and Validation

Gaur demonstrated the engine’s potential in a televised program, where a bike equipped with his prototype achieved 120 KMPL, though the company’s R&D team initially rejected it (The Daily Jagran,). The owner of the company, however, recognized its potential, encouraging further development. Subsequent tests on the 100cc TVS bike yielded the reported 176 KMPL, with Gaur asserting that the engine’s modular design ensures durability, low maintenance, and compatibility with existing vehicle frameworks 

The Government of India has granted two patents—one for the engine’s design and another for its process—with additional patents pending (Live Hindustan,). These patents validate the invention’s novelty and potential, positioning it as a viable alternative to both traditional internal combustion engines and the costly transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

Economic and Environmental Impact

India, which imported $158 billion worth of crude oil in 2024, stands to benefit immensely from Gaur’s invention . A low-consumption engine could slash fuel demand across the transport sector, reducing India’s oil import bill and enhancing energy security. The engine’s near-zero emissions also address urban air pollution, a critical issue in cities like Delhi, where vehicular emissions contribute significantly to poor air quality 

Globally, the invention challenges the automotive industry’s reliance on four-stroke engines and EV-focused R&D. Major manufacturers, which have invested billions in EV infrastructure, may face disruptions to their production cycles, supply chains, and after-sales models if Gaur’s engine is commercialized  However, its adaptability to existing vehicles could ease adoption, offering a cost-effective alternative to EVs for developing nations.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite its potential, Gaur’s journey has been fraught with challenges. The inventor expressed frustration over the lack of institutional support, having sold personal assets to fund his research  He is now seeking investors or automotive companies to mass-produce the engine, stating, “I have done my part; now it’s up to the country to utilize this innovation”  Posts on X, such as by @IndiaInnovates, praised Gaur’s perseverance, with one user noting, “Shailendra Gaur’s six-stroke engine could be India’s answer to Tesla!” 

Critics, however, caution that scaling the technology requires rigorous testing and validation to meet commercial standards. Automotive experts quoted by Live Hindustan emphasized the need for third-party verification to confirm the engine’s performance across diverse conditions  Additionally, the industry’s shift toward EVs, driven by global decarbonization goals, may pose resistance to adopting a new internal combustion technology, despite its eco-friendly claims.

Public and Political Reactions

The invention has sparked widespread excitement, with media outlets like Live Hindustan and YouTube channels proclaiming it a “world-first” (YouTube,). On X, users like @TechIndia2025 hailed Gaur as a “national hero,” urging the government to fund further development. Opposition leaders, including Congress’s Jairam Ramesh, called for government support, tweeting, “Innovators like Shailendra Gaur need backing, not bureaucracy” (X). The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government has yet to comment, but sources suggest Gaur may be invited to present his prototype to state officials

Gaur’s six-stroke engine represents a rare blend of ingenuity and perseverance, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional engines at a time when India grapples with fuel dependency and pollution. The next steps hinge on securing funding and partnerships with automotive giants to refine and commercialize the technology. Gaur remains optimistic, telling “With the right support, this engine can transform not just India but the world” 

As the global automotive industry navigates the costly transition to EVs, Gaur’s invention could position India as a leader in fuel-efficient, low-emission internal combustion technology.
