Hyderabad, January 6, 2026 – In a strong rebuke against rising caste-based violence, Bakki Venkataiah, Chairman of the Telangana State Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) Commission, issued a stern warning on Monday that any attacks on Dalits and tribals would not be tolerated in the state. Speaking during a visit to Sajjapur village in Kohir mandal of Sangareddy district, Venkataiah emphasized the Commission's commitment to protecting marginalized communities and ensuring swift justice.

The chairman's remarks came amid growing concerns over incidents of discrimination and violence against SC and ST communities in rural Telangana. This marked Venkataiah's second visit to the village in the past few days, triggered by the recent demolition of a Dalit resident's home – an act he described as a blatant violation of constitutional rights.

#### Demolition Sparks Outrage
The focal point of the visit was the case of Byagari Ramulu, a local Dalit man whose house was illegally razed by village officials and the newly elected sarpanch (village head). Venkataiah accused the local police of siding with the perpetrators rather than supporting the victims, labeling such inaction as "irresponsible" and vowing disciplinary action against errant officers.

"Attacks on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would not be tolerated in Telangana," Venkataiah declared firmly. He further added, "Any attempt to disturb peace in villages would not be tolerated," underscoring the need for harmony in rural areas where caste tensions often simmer beneath the surface.

In a gesture of immediate support, the Commission handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000 to Ramulu's family to aid their rehabilitation. Venkataiah, accompanied by Commission member Rambabu Nayak, also laid the foundation stone for a new house at the site, symbolizing the panel's resolve to rebuild not just structures but also trust in the system.

#### Broader Context and Calls for Vigilance
While specific details on the motive behind the demolition remain under investigation, the incident highlights a pattern of land disputes and administrative overreach disproportionately affecting Dalit and tribal families in Telangana. Officials present at the event were directed to implement stricter monitoring to prevent recurrences, with the Commission pledging ongoing assistance to the affected family until full justice is delivered.

The visit drew participation from key local figures, including Zaheerabad MLA K. Manik Rao, Zaheerabad Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) D. Devuja, Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department Akhilesh Reddy, Mandal Parishad Development Officer (MPDO) Bharathi, and Tahsildar Supriya. Their presence signals a multi-stakeholder approach to addressing these issues, though activists have called for more proactive measures from the state government to curb caste atrocities.

Venkataiah's warning resonates amid national discussions on the implementation of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, with data from previous years showing thousands of registered cases annually across India. In Telangana, where SC and ST populations form a significant demographic, such interventions are seen as crucial to fostering inclusive development.

As the state gears up for upcoming rural development initiatives, the Commission's stance serves as a reminder that social justice cannot be sidelined. Families like Ramulu's await not just reconstruction, but a future free from fear.
