in a major political transition, senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar officially took charge as the 34th Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, marking a new era for the state. The elevation of DKS is more than just a leadership change within the Congress. It also forces the BJP to rethink its political strategy in one of India's most crucial states.

For years, Shivakumar has been known as the Congress's go-to crisis manager. He played a key role in reviving the party in Karnataka and protecting its governments during political crises. After missing out on the top post in 2023, he has finally secured the Chief Minister's chair following a smooth transition from Siddaramaiah.

Why BJP is watching closely

The BJP had largely built its Karnataka campaign around anti-incumbency against the Congress government, the power struggle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, along with opportunity to make further gains in old Mysuru region- an area dominated by Vokkaliga community.

In fact, Shivakumar comes with a different political style, strong organisational skills and deep roots in the influential Vokkaliga community, making him a tougher opponent for the BJP.

And with Congress high command managing to resolve the possible power-sharing tussle between the two leaders, the possibility of factionalism which could have hurt governance has come to an end.

The grand old party did not see any major rebellion, resignation, or internal rift during the Karnataka power transition.

This said, the transition has now sparked fresh questions for the BJP leadership as to how the party is chalk out roadmap for the 2028 Assembly elections.

Citing BJP leaders, Indian Express report has also said that the saffron party has delayed its key organisational decisions as it reassesses the new political landscape.

A leadership question BJP is yet to answer

While Congress has finally resolved its long-running leadership tussle in Karnataka, the BJP still appears to be searching for a clear face for the 2028 Assembly elections.

According to Indian Express, Shivakumar's elevation has intensified discussions within the BJP over its own leadership roadmap. Even though the party has several prominent leaders in the state, including former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, state unit chief B.Y. Vijayendra and Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka. However, it has not formally projected any one leader as its chief ministerial candidate for the next polls.

The contrast is hard to miss. With Shivakumar now holding both organisational influence and executive authority, Congress has consolidated power around a single leader. The BJP, meanwhile, continues to rely on multiple power centres as it works out its strategy for the future.

Additionally, Shivakumar's rise could also affect the prospects of the BJP's ally, HD Kumaraswamy as both leaders draw support from sections of the Vokkaliga community, potentially intensifying competition for a key voter base in southern Karnataka.
