Karnataka New CM DK Shivakumar Profile: In a major political development in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced that he would step down from the top post during a breakfast meeting with cabinet colleagues at his official residence in Bengaluru. He said that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar would take over as the next Chief Minister.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Karnataka Minister HK Patil said, "The Chief Minister will resign at 3 o’clock. Siddaramaiah said that we will make DK Shivakumar the new Chief Minister, he will become the Chief Minister.
Who Is DK Shivakumar?
Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar, popularly known as DKS, was born on May 15, 1962, in Kanakapura, near Bengaluru, to Kempegowda and Gouramma. Hailing from the Vokkaliga community, he comes from a politically active family. His younger brother, DK Suresh, is also a politician and a former Member of Parliament.
Shivakumar married Usha in 1993, and the couple has three children: two daughters, Aishwarya and Aabharana, and a son, Aakash.
He holds a Master's degree in Political Science from Karnataka State Open University.
His Political Career
Shivakumar's political journey began in the early 1980s as a student leader. His breakthrough came in 1989 when, at the age of 27, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Sathanur constituency on a Congress ticket. He retained this seat in the 1994, 1999, and 2004 elections.
Following the constituency delimitation, he was shifted to Kanakapura, where he continued his winning streak in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.
Shivakumar has been recognised as a 'troubleshooter' for the Congress party. In 2002, during a no-confidence motion against Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, he hosted Maharashtra legislators at his resort near Bengaluru to help the government survive.
Similarly, ahead of the 2017 Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat, Shivakumar hosted 42 Congress MLAs in Bengaluru to prevent defections, ensuring the victory of senior leader Ahmed Patel.
In 2018, he played a central role in forming the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka. His political acumen and close ties with senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have established him as one of the party's most influential figures in the state.
On July 2, 2026, he took charge as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Following Congress's landslide victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Shivakumar was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.
A Look At His Net Worth
Shivakumar is one of the richest politicians in India. According to the election affidavit filed during the Karnataka Assembly elections, his combined declared assets along with those of his dependents amount to Rs 1,413.78 crore, marking a significant increase from the Rs 840.08 crore declared in 2018.
The Congress leader's family holds Rs 273.42 crore in movable assets and Rs 1,140.36 crore in immovable assets, with his personal immovable properties alone valued at Rs 972 crore. Additionally, Shivakumar disclosed liabilities of approximately Rs 263 crore,
The declaration also revealed that he owns a single registered vehicle, a Toyota Qualis, along with gold and silver holdings, and a collection of luxury watches, including Rolex and Hublot.
