R. Sabarinathan, the son of TVK Chief Vijay Thalapathy’s driver, has quickly become one of the most closely watched figures in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, blending personal emotion with political momentum. The 30-year-old, who is contesting from Virugambakkam in Chennai on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ticket, is currently leading against his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) rival-an early trend that could mark a significant symbolic victory for the relatively new party.

Sabarinathan’s rise has drawn widespread attention not just for his electoral performance, but also for his background. He is the son of Rajendran, a long-time driver and trusted aide of actor-turned-politician Vijay, who has been associated with him since his debut film Naalaya Theerpu.

An emotional moment during TVK’s candidate announcement event in March has played a major role in shaping his public image. His journey into politics was not straightforward. His father had hoped he would pursue a stable career in engineering, reflecting a common middle-class aspiration. However, Sabarinathan chose a different path, eventually approaching Vijay directly to express his interest in joining politics. After some persuasion, Vijay convinced Rajendran to support his son’s decision.

After returning to Chennai in 2024, Sabarinathan formally joined TVK and began working at the grassroots level. His candidature from Virugambakkam is seen as both a recognition of his father’s long-standing service and a strategic move by the party to project inclusivity and upward mobility.
