The Congress party on Thursday officially named V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, ending nearly 15 days of intense political suspense, internal lobbying, and high-level deliberations following the Congress-led UDF’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The announcement came after marathon consultations between senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, in New Delhi. The decision was formally communicated by AICC observers and Kerala in-charge leaders at a press briefing in Delhi.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had secured a massive mandate in the Kerala Assembly elections, winning more than two-thirds of the 140-member House and ending a decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by Pinarayi Vijayan. However, despite the emphatic mandate, the Congress struggled to immediately finalise its chief ministerial face due to competing power centres within the party.
Why Did the Decision Take 15 Days?
The prolonged delay exposed deep internal divisions within the Kerala Congress unit. Three major contenders emerged for the top post:
- V. D. Satheesan
- K. C. Venugopal
- Ramesh Chennithala
While Satheesan enjoyed strong support among newly elected MLAs and grassroots Congress workers in Kerala, Venugopal was believed to have backing from sections of the national leadership due to his close organisational role within the Congress high command. Chennithala, meanwhile, remained a veteran claimant with considerable political experience.
The indecision reportedly intensified after factional lobbying, pressure campaigns, and even public poster wars in Kerala. In Wayanad, posters reportedly warned the Gandhi family against selecting Venugopal, claiming it could politically hurt the party in the future.
Congress insiders suggest the leadership ultimately chose Satheesan because of three key factors:
- His role in rebuilding the Congress in Kerala after 2021
- Strong acceptability among MLAs and UDF allies
- Public perception as the face of the anti-LDF campaign
Satheesan, who served as Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, was widely credited with aggressively targeting the Vijayan government on corruption, governance, and economic issues over the past five years.
A Strategic Generational Shift
Political observers see the elevation of Satheesan as a generational transition within the Kerala Congress. At 60, Satheesan represents a relatively younger leadership compared to several traditional Congress heavyweights in the state.
The Congress high command also appeared keen to project a reform-oriented and energetic leadership model after years of criticism that the Kerala unit was dominated by factional veterans. By choosing Satheesan, the party has signaled its intention to modernise its image and strengthen its long-term electoral prospects in the state.
The move is also viewed as a reward for Satheesan’s aggressive opposition politics and his efforts in energising urban youth and middle-class voters during the campaign.
Reactions From Congress Leaders
Soon after the announcement, celebrations erupted across Kerala, especially outside Satheesan’s residence and Congress offices in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. Party workers burst crackers and distributed sweets.
Importantly, K. C. Venugopal publicly endorsed the decision and said he would fully support the new government. His statement is being viewed as an attempt by the Congress leadership to avoid factional tensions after the announcement.
Congress leaders stressed that the delay was part of a democratic consultation process involving MLAs, alliance partners, and central observers. Senior leader Ajay Maken defended the process, arguing that consensus-building in a democratic party naturally takes time.
Challenges Before Satheesan
As he prepares to take oath as Kerala’s new Chief Minister, Satheesan faces several major challenges:
- Managing coalition expectations within the UDF
- Addressing Kerala’s fiscal and debt concerns
- Delivering on campaign promises
- Balancing factional interests inside Congress
- Countering a potentially aggressive opposition from the CPI(M)-led LDF
Political analysts believe his first cabinet formation will be closely watched, especially regarding representation for different Congress factions and UDF allies.
The Congress leadership now hopes the appointment will end internal tensions and allow the party to focus on governance after returning to power in one of India’s most politically significant states.
