Varanasi, April 11, 2026: A complaint has been filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Varanasi seeking registration of an FIR against academician, author, and social activist Prof. Madhu Purnima Kishwar for allegedly running a “malicious and premeditated” social media campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the judiciary.

The complaint was lodged by Advocate Shashank Shekhar Tripathi, who serves as the Convener of the BJP Legal Cell in the Kashi region. It accuses Kishwar of misusing her verified X (formerly Twitter) account and other digital platforms to post objectionable content that allegedly portrays the judicial process as biased, undermines public faith in institutions, and targets the country’s top leadership.

According to reports, the posts in question include references to “direct action by PM” and other remarks that the complainant claims are designed to erode trust in the judiciary and spread defamatory narratives against PM Modi and CM Adityanath.

On Friday (April 10 or 11, 2026), the CJM court took cognisance of the complaint, registered it as a miscellaneous case, and directed the local police to submit a report . The court has not yet ordered the registration of an FIR but has sought the police’s response on the matter.

# Background on the Controversy

Prof. Madhu Kishwar, a former senior fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) and known for her earlier pro-Modi writings—including the book Modinama—has in recent weeks made a series of sharp criticisms and serious personal allegations against the Prime Minister on social media. These include claims about “sexual corruption,” “predatory behaviour,” and influence peddling in ticket and ministerial distributions, often echoing or responding to similar remarks by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy.

Kishwar’s shift from being a vocal supporter to a vocal critic has drawn significant attention and backlash, with some describing her posts as part of a broader pattern of unsubstantiated attacks.

The Varanasi complaint specifically highlights social media activity that allegedly defames national leaders and casts aspersions on the judiciary. Legal experts note that such private complaints under CrPC Section 156(3) or 200 often lead to court-directed police inquiries before an FIR is registered, depending on the prima facie merit.

# Reactions and Context

The development comes amid heightened political discourse following Kishwar’s recent posts, which have gone viral and sparked debates across platforms. Some users and commentators have called the complaint a response to her criticism, while others view the allegations in her posts as serious enough to warrant legal scrutiny.

No immediate reaction from Prof. Kishwar or her legal team on this specific Varanasi complaint has been widely reported as of now. She has previously faced and successfully contested legal cases, including the quashing of an old attempt-to-murder FIR by the Delhi High Court in 2025.

This is the latest in a series of legal and political controversies involving Kishwar’s public statements. The police report, once submitted, will determine the next course of action—whether an FIR is registered and under which sections of the IPC (possibly related to defamation, promoting enmity, or public mischief).

The matter is currently pending before the Varanasi CJM court. Further updates are expected once the police submit their report.
