Guwahati/Indore, April 9, 2026 – A shocking case of alleged voter impersonation has come to light during the ongoing Assam Assembly elections, with a woman from Uttar Pradesh travelling across states to cast a fraudulent vote using the voter ID card of another person’s wife. The incident, captured in a now-viral video, has sparked outrage over electoral malpractices and raised fresh questions about the security of voter lists and inter-state movement of bogus voters.

According to eyewitness accounts and the video footage circulating widely on social media, the woman arrived at a polling station in Assam claiming she had been authorised by her “husband”, Vicky Kumar, to vote on his wife’s name. She produced the voter ID card belonging to Vicky Kumar’s wife and attempted to cast the ballot. When confronted on the spot by the actual Vicky Kumar – who happened to be present or was alerted – he categorically denied knowing the woman or ever handing over his wife’s voter ID to her.

In the dramatic video, Vicky Kumar is heard exclaiming in Hindi: “Yeh ladies jo hai, mera wife ka naam pe bogus vote maarne aayi hai. Mera husband laake diya hai… Vicky Kumar hai mera husband ka naam. Vicky Kumar hum hain!” (This lady has come to cast a bogus vote in my wife’s name. She says my husband gave it to her… My husband’s name is Vicky Kumar. I am Vicky Kumar!) He appears visibly agitated and shocked, repeatedly asserting that he has no connection whatsoever with the woman from Uttar Pradesh and never provided her with any documents. The woman, whose identity has not been officially released, is seen defending herself initially before the confrontation escalates.

The video, which has garnered millions of views within hours, shows polling officials intervening as the woman is questioned. Local reports indicate she claimed to have travelled from Uttar Pradesh specifically to vote using the borrowed or allegedly supplied ID. Authorities are now investigating how she obtained the document and whether this points to a larger organised racket involving fake or transferred voter IDs across state boundaries.

Election officials in Assam have confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the woman under relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Indian Penal Code for impersonation and electoral fraud. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been intimated, and a probe has been ordered to verify if similar instances of bogus voting by out-of-state individuals are occurring, especially in light of recent complaints about influx of non-local voters in lower Assam constituencies ahead of the 2026 polls.

Political parties have reacted sharply. A senior BJP leader in Assam termed it “a blatant attack on the sanctity of democracy” and demanded strict action against any network facilitating such cross-state voter fraud. Congress spokespersons, while condemning the incident, called for a comprehensive audit of voter lists to prevent misuse of IDs. Independent observers have noted that Assam has seen heightened scrutiny over voter rolls due to past controversies involving illegal immigrants and D-voter issues; this latest episode has intensified calls for stricter Aadhaar-voter ID linkage and real-time verification at polling booths.

Vicky Kumar, the man at the centre of the confrontation, later told local reporters that he was at the SDM office (or polling-related facility) dealing with his own voter-related matter when the woman appeared. He stressed that neither he nor his wife had ever met or authorised the UP woman. “I don’t know who she is. How can someone travel from another state and try to vote in my wife’s place? This is a serious security lapse,” he said.

The viral clip has triggered widespread debate on social media, with netizens questioning the effectiveness of electoral safeguards. Many have shared similar past cases of voter ID misuse, while others have demanded CCTV footage from the polling station and swift arrests. The ECI has appealed to citizens to report any suspicious activity and has reminded voters that impersonation is a cognisable offence punishable by imprisonment.

As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of vulnerabilities in India’s electoral process, particularly during high-stakes state assembly elections. Officials have assured that the matter will be handled with utmost urgency to restore public confidence in the voting system.

This developing story is being closely monitored by election watchdogs, and further updates are expected as police and ECI officials question the accused woman and trace the origin of the voter ID card.
