TVK Chief Vijay Discloses Two Pending FIRs in Fresh Tamil Nadu Election Affidavit Amid Discrepancy Row

The discrepancies have triggered political and legal scrutiny. Legal experts point out that failure to fully disclose pending cases in nomination papers can be grounds for objection by rival candidates or even rejection of the nomination under election rules. However, supporters and some analysts argue that the subsequent disclosure and the filing of a supplementary affidavit may help establish that there was no deliberate concealment, especially since one case was recent and the other not formally communicated to him.

Chennai, April 5, 2026: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay has come under scrutiny after discrepancies surfaced in his election affidavits filed for two constituencies ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23. In response, he filed a revised supplementary affidavit on Saturday for the Perambur seat to correct inconsistencies, including details on his age, assets, and pending criminal cases.

Vijay, who is contesting from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) East, initially filed his nomination for Perambur on March 30 (or around April 1, according to varying reports). In that affidavit, he declared no pending criminal cases against him and listed his age as 52. However, the affidavit filed for Trichy East on April 2 disclosed two pending FIRs and recorded his age as 51.

# Details of the Two Pending FIRs
According to the Trichy East affidavit and media reports, the two cases are:

Peravallur Police Station case (Chennai, FIR No. 74/2026): Registered by Greater Chennai Police for allegedly causing inconvenience to the public and related issues during a rally/roadshow in Perambur immediately after filing his nomination there. This appears to be a recent case linked to campaign activities.

Koodakovil Police Station case (Madurai, FIR No. 108/2025): Filed during TVK's second party conference in 2025 based on a complaint by a self-proclaimed supporter. The complainant alleged that Vijay's bouncers assaulted or pushed him when he tried to climb onto a ramp or stage area used by the leader. Vijay has stated that he was not aware of this FIR earlier, as he had not received any summons or formal communication from the police, and learned about it only after filing his Perambur nomination.

Vijay maintained that his disclosure in the Trichy East filing demonstrated bona fide intent, as he updated the information once he became aware of the details.

# Revised Affidavit and Other Discrepancies
On Saturday (April 4/5), Vijay submitted a corrected supplementary affidavit through his proposer to the Returning Officer in Perambur, addressing the mismatches. This includes updating the criminal case disclosures, age (to align the records), and certain asset valuations or bank account details for election expenses.

Other inconsistencies noted by observers include differences in financial declarations and election-related bank accounts between the two affidavits.

# Reactions and Potential Implications
The discrepancies have triggered political and legal scrutiny. Legal experts point out that failure to fully disclose pending cases in nomination papers can be grounds for objection by rival candidates or even rejection of the nomination under election rules. However, supporters and some analysts argue that the subsequent disclosure and the filing of a supplementary affidavit may help establish that there was no deliberate concealment, especially since one case was recent and the other not formally communicated to him.

TVK has not issued a detailed official response beyond the action of filing the revised affidavit, but the party is likely to defend the corrections as routine clarifications.

Vijay, a popular Tamil film star making his electoral debut with TVK, has declared significant assets in his affidavits — running into several hundred crore rupees, including luxury vehicles — positioning the party as a new force in Tamil Nadu politics.

The Election Commission is expected to examine any formal objections raised during the scrutiny process. The Tamil Nadu Assembly polls are a key contest, with major parties vying for power in the state.

This development adds to the early campaign narrative as nominations continue and parties gear up for what promises to be a closely watched election.
