Her parents' selfless choice amid profound grief has given the gift of life to multiple recipients, turning an unspeakable tragedy into a powerful testament to humanity and hope.
Aalin, a resident of Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, was traveling with her mother, Sherin Ann John, and grandparents when the car they were in collided with another vehicle near Pallam Borma Junction on MC Road in Kottayam on February 5, 2026. The infant sustained critical injuries, including severe traumatic brain injury, rib fractures, and lung damage. She was rushed to Amrita Hospital in Kochi, where she received intensive care in the Pediatric ICU, including emergency neurosurgery to relieve brain swelling.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical teams, Aalin's condition deteriorated, and she was declared brain-dead on February 10 or shortly thereafter. In their darkest hour, her parents — Arun Abraham and Sherin Ann John — made the extraordinarily courageous decision to donate her organs. Coordinated by the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO), the process allowed the retrieval of her liver, two kidneys, heart valve, and corneas (eyes).
These donations provided a new lease of life to at least four to five individuals, including young children:
- Her liver was transplanted into a six-month-old infant at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram (reportedly Government Medical College or associated facility).
- Her two kidneys went to a 10-year-old child and another recipient, also in Thiruvananthapuram.
- Her heart valve was sent to Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology.
- Her corneas were donated to restore sight for others.
Reports indicate that the recipients, particularly the young children, are recovering well post-transplant. The swift transportation of the organs — including a special ambulance run for the liver and kidneys — ensured timely surgeries.
Aalin's act has been hailed as a beacon of compassion. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed deep sorrow over the loss and praised the parents' "supreme sacrifice," directing that Aalin be laid to rest with full state honors. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar described the decision as "noble" and "beyond words," noting that it gifted life and hope to others. Health Minister Veena George and other leaders, along with celebrities like actor Kamal Haasan, publicly saluted Arun and Sherin for their selflessness.
On February 15, 2026, Aalin was buried at St. Thomas CSI Church cemetery in Nedungadappally, Pathanamthitta, amid an emotional farewell attended by family, mourners, medical staff, and officials. She was remembered as a "baby angel" and "tiny hero" whose brief life left an enduring legacy.
