Law will act if women are insulted: Tamil Nadu CM Vijay
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday, September 7, said that he will not tolerate any abusive language against women and that the law would take its course if they were humiliated. His remarks come amid a massive political row involving Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin and actor Trisha Krishnan.
"In the name of politics, if we personally disrespect our people, women, or anyone else and speak in a very low and degrading manner, my request is: please don’t do that. Recently, in Tamil Nadu, it seems as though a river of vulgarity and hatred is continuously flowing. Speaking abusively about women, making defamatory remarks, and using double-meaning words, this is wrong. I want to tell those who do this just one thing," Vijay said in the State Assembly, without naming Stalin Jr.
"I will not tolerate abusive language against women"
Vijay further stated that criticism is part of political discourse, but there should be no defamatory remarks directed at women. "Women are the main reason behind my political victory. I will not tolerate any abusive language against women. There can be harsh political criticism, but there should not be any defamatory remarks against women," he said.
Vijay speaks out against the abuse faced by former CM J Jayalalithaa
Meanwhile, he also recalled the vicious abuse and violence faced by former CM J Jayalalithaa in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. "We have heard about how much humiliation former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, as a woman, faced in this very Assembly, from this very Opposition... For 50 years, the same people have been voting for them. But when those same people did not vote for them, they say that those people will not even have a good death. If they cannot accept the people’s verdict even in their minds, then the question naturally arises: why should they remain in politics? At least, we must respect the people’s verdict," the Tamil Nadu CM added.

The row erupted during the Cauvery protest in Thanjavur on August 3, when supporters chanted the south actress's name while Udhayanidhi Stalin was addressing the crowd. He paused, smirked, and made a remark that was widely interpreted as a vulgar allusion to her. Stalin Jr, however, denied making any abusive remark, later stating that he was referring to the Cauvery issue.
What did Vijay say about crimes against children and women?
On crimes committed against women and children, Vijay said that the police had been ordered to act immediately. "Members have raised concern over crimes against women and children. For this government, it is a very important issue," he said.
The Chief Minister further stated that the govt wanted to prevent crimes, not just act after they had occurred.
