The Kerala-based deep-tech startup Accubits Invent Pvt Ltd has developed a groundbreaking, non-invasive device called VolTrac that can detect diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and metabolic disorders through a simple breath test in under 90 seconds.

The VolTrac device functions like a breathalyzer: users blow into a handheld unit, and proprietary sensors analyze VOCs—unique molecular "signatures" emitted in breath (and sweat) that reflect metabolic changes associated with specific diseases, often appearing before symptoms. Lab-verified results claim 98.5% accuracy, with detection possible in as little as 90 seconds (or 1.5 minutes in some descriptions).

Founded by chemical engineer Dr. Nidhin Sreekumar and his wife, microbiologist Dr. Aswathy Udayan, the company—operating from the Bio360 Life Sciences Park in Thiruvananthapuram—originated from research into how plants communicate via volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The couple pivoted this concept to human health after Dr. Udayan suggested applying it to disease detection.

This innovation promises to revolutionize early screening by eliminating needles, pain, and lengthy lab processes, potentially making diagnostics more accessible, especially in resource-limited settings. Early detection could dramatically improve survival rates for conditions like cancer and TB while reducing overall healthcare costs.

The startup, registered in 2020 and based in Technopark, integrates biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and material science. In late 2025, Accubits Invent secured a patent for its breath-based VOC sensor technology, marking a significant milestone and positioning India as a leader in non-invasive diagnostics.

While the technology is still emerging and not yet flawless (as with many early-stage innovations), it represents a powerful step toward preventive healthcare. The device can screen for multiple conditions, including various cancers, TB, diabetes, liver disorders, and more.

This Kerala innovation has drawn attention for its potential to transform how we approach disease detection—turning a simple exhale into an early warning system.
