On January 30-31, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice released a significant batch of Epstein-related files, including emails, as part of a congressional mandate for transparency. These documents include over 3 million pages, videos, and images connected to investigations into Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges.
Congress leader and spokesperson Pawan Khera highlighted a purported 2017 email attributed to Epstein, dated around July 9, 2017. In it, Epstein reportedly wrote: “The Indian Prime Minister Modi took advice and danced and sang in Israel for the benefit of the US President. They had met a few weeks ago. IT WORKED!”
Khera described the reference as a “matter of national shame,” labeling Epstein a “convicted human trafficker, child sex offender, and serial rapist.” He claimed the email suggested Modi had sought Epstein's “advice” and performed in Israel (referring to Modi's official state visit from July 4-6, 2017, hosted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) to benefit then-U.S. President Donald Trump. Khera demanded clarifications from the Prime Minister on:
- What specific “advice” was allegedly sought from Epstein.
- What was meant by “dancing and singing” for the “benefit of the US president.”
- The implication of Epstein's phrase “IT WORKED!”
The Congress party, including its official X (formerly Twitter) account, amplified the claim, calling it “extremely shameful” and questioning Modi's judgment, transparency, and diplomatic propriety. They argued it raised concerns about India's national dignity and international reputation.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) swiftly rejected the allegations. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that while Modi's official visit to Israel in July 2017 was factual, the remaining allusions in the email were “little more than trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal, which deserve to be dismissed with the utmost contempt.”
The MEA emphasized that no credible evidence supports any meaningful connection between Modi and Epstein beyond the coincidental reference to the publicly known diplomatic trip. Government sources and some media outlets have framed the opposition's push as politically motivated misinformation amid the broader release of Epstein documents, which also mention other global figures.
The controversy has fueled debates on social media and in Indian political circles, with the opposition pressing for accountability and the ruling side dismissing it as baseless smears. No further official details from the Epstein files have substantiated any direct personal or improper link between Modi and Epstein beyond this single email excerpt. The episode highlights ongoing political tensions in India as new batches of U.S. Epstein records continue to draw international scrutiny.
