The Suvendu Adhikari-led BJP government in Bengal is set to introduce several key bills in a one-day special session of the Assembly on Monday. The most discussed among them is the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill, which the government is expected to bring forward.

Along with the UCC, four other bills will also be introduced in the special session, including one related to the confiscation and auction of illegally acquired properties.

New Law on the Lines of the “Yogi Model”

Apart from this, the state government will also introduce the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which has been drafted on the lines of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s model.

The law will crack down on activities such as

* Organised Crime

* Illegal Mining

* Arms and Drug Trafficking

* Human Trafficking

* Damage to Government Property

The proposed law also provides for the detention of individuals deemed a threat to public safety for up to one year, along with the confiscation of offenders’ property.

Government Push for UCC Implementation

The Suvendu Adhikari-led government will implement the UCC in the state within the stipulated timeline.

It is known that the BJP had promised in its election “Sankalp Patra” that the UCC would be implemented in the state within six months of coming to power, and now the government is moving rapidly towards fulfilling that pledge.

The government is set to introduce the UCC bill well before the deadline outlined in the party’s election manifesto. This development could be one of the most significant legal and social policy changes in Bengal in recent times, as the BJP is presenting the UCC as a major reform.

Equal Legal System for All Citizens

The proposed law will provide equal legal treatment for all citizens in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and live-in relationships. The government claims this will promote gender equality and equal civil rights.

Another proposed legislation targets public disorder, riots, arson, vandalism, and attacks on police or public servants. Under this law, authorities will have the power to seize and auction the property of offenders to recover damages.

The government has described the proposed laws as a major step towards strengthening law and order and curbing crime in the state. However, the opposition and human rights organisations are expected to raise strong objections and trigger a wider debate. As a result, Monday’s Assembly session is seen as politically significant.
