Dharmendra Pradhan was appointed Education Minister in July 2021.

Arvind Pandey, New Delhi: In the 12 years of the Modi government, four education ministers have been appointed, but not a single one has completed their full five-year term. These include Smriti Irani, Prakash Javadekar, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, and now Dharmendra Pradhan.

Dharmendra Pradhan, of all the education ministers so far, has held the position for the longest period. However, this has been 5 years combined during 2 terms. He was appointed Education Minister in 2019, midway through the Modi government's second term, but had to leave it midway through his third term.

4 Education Ministers In 12 Years

After coming to power in 2014, Smriti Irani was first made the Education Minister in the Modi government, which was then known as the Human Resource Development Minister, but she was removed after just two years.

In her place, in July 2016, Prakash Javadekar was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, now the Ministry of Education, but he too could remain in this post for only about three years.

After this, in May 2019, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was made the Education Minister, but he was also removed after two years.

Dharmendra Pradhan was appointed Education Minister in July 2021, during the second term of the Modi government, holding the post till now and being the longest-serving Education Minister in the last 12 years.

Tenure Of Modi Govt Education Ministers

-Smriti Irani: May 2014 to July 2016 - more than two years and one month.

-Prakash Javadekar: From July 2016 to May 2019 - about three years.

-Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank: May 2019 to July 2021 - two years and one month.

-Dharmendra Pradhan: July 2021 to July 2026 - over five years.

Dharmendra Pradhan’s Resignation Driven By Nationwide Protests

Amid nationwide protests by Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and Opposition leaders over the NEET paper leak, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday announced his resignation. While sharing the update in a post on his X handle, Pradhan informed that he has sent his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He further stated that the recent developments had affected him, adding that the issue was not a matter of personal reputation.

'Tendered My Resignation To PM'

"To ensure that anti-national elements are not benefitted by the situation at Jantar Mantar and across the country, that the nation remains united, students in India do not get tangled in legal complexities and focus on their studies and their career, I have tendered my resignation to the Prime Minister," Pradhan's letter read.

Pralhad Joshi Takes Over Education Ministry

After being assigned the additional charge of the Education Ministry following Pradhan’s resignation, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said he accepts the responsibility with “duty and humility”. Joshi thanked PM Modi and assured that he would work with dedication to carry forward the government’s education initiatives and reforms.
