In a significant development, right-wing speaker Gautam Khattar has been arrested by Goa Police with the assistance of Himachal Pradesh Police in Kullu district on Friday. The arrest comes in connection with alleged derogatory remarks made against Saint Francis Xavier, a revered figure among Christians, particularly in Goa.
According to official sources, a Goa Police Crime Branch team is expected to take custody of the accused shortly and bring him to Goa for further legal proceedings.
Reacting to the arrest, Stany Pinto, State President of the Karnataka Christa Sanghatane Organization, expressed gratitude to both the Goa Police and Himachal Pradesh Police for their coordinated efforts in tracing and apprehending the accused. He also thanked members of the Christian community and leaders in Goa who had been actively protesting against the alleged offensive remarks.
Pinto stated that strict legal action must be taken against Khattar for making derogatory statements about Saint Francis Xavier. He urged authorities to ensure that the accused is denied bail and demanded that he be made to sign a bond of ₹1 crore as a preventive measure against making similar statements in the future.
Furthermore, Pinto called for legal action not only against Khattar but also against the organizers of the event where the controversial remarks were allegedly made.
The incident has sparked tension and strong reactions within the Christian community, particularly in Goa, where Saint Francis Xavier holds deep religious and cultural significance. Authorities are expected to maintain close watch on the situation as legal proceedings move forward.
