New Delhi, December 14, 2025 – Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Sunday escalated his ongoing campaign against alleged electoral malpractices, vowing to remove the "Narendra Modi-RSS government" from power while standing firm with "satya" (truth). Speaking at the Congress party's 'Vote Chor Gaddi Chhod' rally at Ramlila Maidan here, Gandhi launched a direct attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), naming its top officials and accusing them of bias in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gandhi, addressing a large crowd of party workers from across the country, declared, "We will stand with ‘satya’ (truth) and will remove the Narendra Modi-RSS government from power. They have ‘satta’ (power), and they indulge in ‘vote chori’." He alleged that the BJP had transferred Rs 10,000 to voters during elections without any action from the poll body, adding, "In this fight between truth and untruth, the Election Commission is working with the BJP government."

The Wayanad MP specifically named Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, claiming they were operating to benefit the BJP. Gandhi further accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of enacting a law to grant "immunity" to ECI officials, promising, "(Prime Minister Narendra) Modi brought a new law to give immunity to EC; we will change this law retroactively and act against election commissioners." He emphasized a commitment to non-violence, stating, "We’ll work with truth and non-violence to defeat Modi and (Amit) Shah." Asserting that truth would ultimately prevail, Gandhi warned the ECI: "EC should not forget they are country's EC not of Modi."

The rally, organized as part of a broader Congress movement against what the party calls "institutional capture" of electoral processes, drew participants from states like Haryana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka—regions where the opposition has alleged vote theft in recent polls. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who also addressed the gathering, accused the RSS and BJP's ideology—rooted in the Manusmriti—of threatening the Constitution, saying, "Only Congress party's ideology can save the nation; ideology of (Mohan) Bhagwat... or the Manusmriti will not save the nation, but destroy it." Kharge praised Gandhi's efforts, noting, "Rahul Gandhi is fighting for the country, and to strengthen that fight is the responsibility of us all." He alleged that governments in states like Haryana, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh had come to power through stolen votes, claiming, "The people sitting in power today have not been elected by the people."

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined the criticism, questioning the integrity of every stage of the election process and directly naming the ECI's top brass. She challenged the BJP to contest elections fairly, alleging deep suspicion among citizens due to the poll body's actions. Party sources indicated the event is tied to a nationwide signature campaign that has reportedly gathered over five crore signatures to present to the President, highlighting complaints about electronic voting machines (EVMs), bogus voters, and ignored opposition grievances.

This rally comes amid a year-long controversy sparked by Gandhi's allegations of electoral fraud dating back to August 2025, when he first claimed evidence of "vote chori" in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and subsequent state elections. In Parliament's Winter Session earlier this month, Gandhi had posed three key questions to the government on ECI reforms, including why the Chief Justice of India was removed from the selection panel for commissioners and why laws on CCTV footage retention were altered—accusations he reiterated at the rally. The opposition has demanded greater transparency, including full VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) counting and independent audits.

The BJP swiftly hit back, dismissing the rally as a ploy to undermine institutions. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi condemned the event, alleging "abusive language and insults" against Prime Minister Modi, including slogans wishing him harm. "This shows that the Congress party is now becoming a platform for anarchy instead of a political party, operating under a Muslim League-Maoist agenda," Trivedi said. Another BJP MP, Sambit Patra, mocked the timing of the rally—coming days after a parliamentary debate on electoral reforms—linking it to unrelated issues like border security (SIR) and accusing Congress of fabricating stories to protect "infiltrators." He pointed out the irony: "When they won in Telangana, Himachal, Karnataka, there was no vote theft, but where the BJP won, there was vote theft."

The exchanges reflect deepening polarization ahead of upcoming state elections, with the opposition framing the fight as a battle for democracy and the ruling coalition viewing it as baseless mudslinging. Social media buzz, including shares from news agencies like PTI, amplified Gandhi's key quotes, with posts garnering thousands of views within hours. As the Congress pushes for legal changes to hold ECI officials accountable, the controversy shows no signs of abating, with critics like 272 eminent citizens earlier this year accusing Gandhi of eroding faith in constitutional bodies through "unsubstantiated accusations."
