New Delhi, October 15, 2025 – In a charged parliamentary showdown, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi tabled an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, demanding an immediate CBI investigation into the alleged suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, framing the tragedy as a stark manifestation of "deepening caste-based discrimination" within the state's police force. The motion, which seeks to suspend regular business for an urgent discussion, was met with immediate uproar from the Treasury benches, leading to a brief adjournment as BJP members accused Gandhi of "exploiting a personal loss for vote-bank politics."

Gandhi, rising shortly after Question Hour amid chants of "Justice for Puran Kumar," delivered a scathing 10-minute speech that blended personal anguish with systemic critique. "This is not just one man's death—it's a symbol of the social poison being spread by the BJP-RSS ecosystem, where even an accomplished Dalit officer like Y. Puran Kumar is hounded to his grave for daring to rise above his caste," he thundered, referencing Kumar's suicide note that accused senior officials of casteist slurs and professional sabotage. "The government must support the SC/ST community, not crush it. A CBI probe is non-negotiable to unearth the rot—no more cover-ups," Gandhi added, invoking the recently added SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act charges to the FIR following the family's plea.

The motion, supported by 52 Opposition MPs including allies from the INDIA bloc, highlights the escalating political storm over Kumar's death on October 7. The 1998-batch officer, promoted to Additional Director General just months prior, allegedly hanged himself in his Chandigarh residence, leaving a 10-page note and video implicating Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and two others in abetment through harassment. Gandhi's intervention follows his emotional meeting with Kumar's wife Amneet and daughters on October 14, where the family withheld key evidence—a laptop with recordings—until arrests are made, a stance Gandhi amplified during the session.

 BJP's Counter: 'Opportunism Over Empathy'
The Treasury benches erupted in protests, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah dismissing the motion as "premature and partisan" during a post-adjournment briefing. "The Haryana government has already acted decisively—DGP on leave, SIT probing, FIR updated with SC/ST clauses. Rahul Gandhi's theatrics won't derail justice; it's a blatant bid to communalize a tragic incident ahead of polls," Shah retorted, pointing to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's October 14 order extending Kapur's leave and appointing an interim DGP.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra went further on national TV, accusing Gandhi of "vulture-like politics": "He visits the family for photo-ops, tables motions without waiting for the SIT report due in days. This is the same Congress that ignored Dalit voices for decades—now they cry caste only when it suits." Haryana BJP chief Subhash Sudha echoed the sentiment, claiming the state had invoked stringent sections proactively and urged the Opposition to "let the law take its course" rather than "parliamentary disruptions."

Speaker Om Birla allowed the motion under Rule 184 but deferred the debate to Thursday, citing the need for consensus, a move that drew jeers from the Opposition. Congress chief whip Kodikunnil Suresh decried it as "Speaker's bias," vowing to press the issue relentlessly.

Family's Stance: 'No Justice Without Arrests'
Amneet Kumar, speaking to reporters outside the Chandigarh residence post-Gandhi's visit, reiterated the family's distrust: "Puran's note is clear—they called him a 'quota babu' and sabotaged his career. The laptop holds proof, but we won't hand it over until the guilty are cuffed. Rahul ji's support gives us hope." In a poignant letter to Sonia Gandhi, released Tuesday, Amneet detailed the "daily humiliations" her husband endured, prompting the Congress matriarch to pen a consolatory note promising "unwavering solidarity."

Dalit rights activists rallied outside Parliament, with Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad joining the fray: "If an IG-rank officer succumbs to caste hate in BJP's Haryana, imagine the plight of foot soldiers. Rahul's motion is a wake-up call—time for real atonement."

### A National Reckoning on Caste in Uniforms
Kumar's case—the first high-profile IPS suicide linked to alleged caste bias—has exposed fissures in India's law enforcement, where SC/ST officers comprise 15% of the force but report disproportionate harassment, per a 2024 NCRB data. Gandhi tied it to broader "Manusmriti revival" under the BJP, drawing parallels to recent Dalit atrocities in UP and MP.

As the winter session heats up, the motion could snowball into demands for nationwide reforms, including mandatory sensitivity training and a dedicated oversight body for caste complaints in services. With the SIT's preliminary findings due Friday, the Lok Sabha's verdict Thursday may not just settle a debate—but redefine accountability in khaki.
