Raebareli SIR Drive: 2.34 lakh voters issued notices over age and record discrepancies

This development comes amid broader concerns and debates over the SIR process across states, including large-scale deletions in draft rolls (e.g., nearly 2.89 crore names removed statewide in Uttar Pradesh due to death, migration, duplication, or non-verification). District authorities in Raebareli have made lists of affected voters (including no-mapping and logical discrepancy categories) available on official portals for public checking.

In Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to approximately 2.34 lakh voters as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drive of electoral rolls. These notices address discrepancies related to age mismatches, record inconsistencies, and other logical issues in voter documentation.

According to reports, the notices primarily target voters whose details show anomalies such as inconsistencies in age relative to parents or grandparents, mismatches in family records, or other logical discrepancies flagged during the SIR verification process. This follows an earlier phase where around 2.32 lakh voters received notices for "no mapping" issues—meaning their names could not be linked to the 2003 voter lists (the reference point for the last major SIR exercise). Hearings for those earlier cases are currently underway.

The SIR exercise, a nationwide effort to cleanse and update electoral rolls, has been particularly intensive in Uttar Pradesh, where millions of voters have faced scrutiny. Statewide, over 3.26 crore voters could potentially receive hearing notices due to mapping failures (around 1.04 crore unmapped to 2003 lists) and logical discrepancies (around 2.22 crore cases). In Raebareli, the latest round focuses on age and record-related flags, requiring affected voters to appear before Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) or Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and submit supporting documents from the ECI's list of 12 mandated proofs, including evidence of age, citizenship, and residence.

Officials emphasize that the drive aims to ensure accurate, transparent, and error-free voter lists ahead of future elections. Voters are urged to respond promptly to the notices to avoid potential removal from the rolls. Hearings are being conducted in phases, with opportunities for verification and appeals.

Affected residents can visit the Raebareli district website or contact local BLOs (Booth Level Officers) for details on their status and required documentation. The ECI maintains that the exercise upholds the integrity of India's electoral process.
