Press Day Celebrated; Annual Awards Presented to 13 Journalists

The Pen Is a Powerful Weapon, Says Vijay Sankeshwar

Hubballi: In the backdrop of ongoing wars across the world, discussions often focus on powerful weapons and advanced military technology. However, the most effective weapon in the hands of a journalist is the pen, which has the power to build or destroy an individual's reputation and shape society, said entrepreneur Vijay Sankeshwar.

He was speaking at the Press Day Celebration and Annual Awards Presentation Ceremony organised by the Dharwad District Working Journalists' Association at the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce in Hubballi on Sunday.

Sankeshwar said journalists carry a significant responsibility in shaping the future of the country. He stressed the need for the media to contribute to building a prosperous India and to raise awareness about the kind of future that should be created for the next generation.

He urged journalists to have the courage to call a wrongdoer wrong and to uphold truth and accountability in their profession.

Former KLE institution director Shankaranna Munavalli said that journalists should focus on important issues and bring matters of public interest to the attention of society. He also announced that KLE would make arrangements to provide special health cards for journalists and their families.

Addressing the gathering, Munavalli observed that the rise of digital media, along with the growing influence of television and online platforms, has affected newspaper readership. He said journalists and newspapers could attract more readers by understanding changing public interests and producing relevant and engaging content.

During the ceremony, veteran journalist Ganesh Joshi was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. A total of 13 journalists were felicitated for their contributions to journalism. Among the award recipients were Shivaraya Pujari, a reporter with Prajavani, and Shaheen Mokashi of Deccan Herald.

State Working Journalists' Association Secretary Pundalik Baloji, Media Academy member Abbas Mulla, and executive committee members Kattimani, Ganapati Gangolli and Basavaraj were present at the event.

Association president Bandu Kulkarni presided over the programme, while General Secretary Gurunath Bhandage was present. Ambarish Hanagal compered the event.

The programme highlighted the vital role of journalism in safeguarding democracy, raising public awareness and contributing to the development of society.
