New Delhi, April 20, 2026 — President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and several other top political leaders across party lines have expressed deep grief and extended condolences following a tragic explosion at a firecracker factory in Kattanarpatti village near Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu on Sunday, April 19.

At least 23 people, including women workers, were killed in the powerful blast at the Vanaja Fireworks unit, while 8 to 11 others sustained injuries, some critical. The death toll is feared to rise as rescue teams continue searching the debris. Around 30 workers were reportedly present at the licensed private manufacturing unit when the explosion occurred around 3:30 pm. The cause of the blast, which reportedly started on the front veranda, is yet to be officially determined, though initial probes point to possible friction or mishandling during operations. Rescue and fire services have brought the situation under control, but operations to recover any remaining victims are ongoing.

President Murmu described the incident as “deeply distressing” in a post on X (formerly Twitter). She conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed profound sorrow, stating: “The accident that occurred in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is deeply distressing. I convey my deepest condolences to those grieving the loss of their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover swiftly.” Reports indicate that the PM has announced ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased.

Other leaders who condoled the tragedy include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. CM Stalin directed officials to provide immediate medical aid and support to the affected families, while leaders across the political spectrum expressed solidarity with the victims.

Virudhunagar district, along with nearby Sivakasi, is a major hub for India’s firecracker industry, contributing significantly to the country’s production. However, the region has witnessed several similar accidents in the past due to the hazardous nature of the work. Authorities have ordered a detailed investigation into safety protocols and possible lapses at the unit.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over safety standards in the fireworks sector. Local administration and fire services are providing on-ground support, and hospitals in the area have been put on high alert to treat the injured.

As the nation mourns the loss, families in Kattanarpatti and surrounding areas continue to grapple with the sudden tragedy. Further updates on the exact cause and additional relief measures are expected in the coming hours.
