Ranipet, February 24, 2026 — The parents of a Class 6 student from the Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School in Kalavai, Ranipet district, have demanded the immediate arrest of a teacher accused of hurling casteist slurs at their son, physically assaulting him, and subjecting him to discriminatory treatment.

The incident involves a teacher named Barani, who allegedly made derogatory caste-based remarks against the boy, who belongs to the Arunthathiyar community (a Scheduled Caste). According to the parents, the teacher not only verbally abused the child with casteist slurs but also beat him and forced him to sit on the last bench as a form of humiliation.

The boy's father, R Murugan, expressed deep anguish over the episode in a statement to reporters. “My son studies well. The teacher made several casteist slurs, beat him up, and made him sit on the last bench. My son became mentally upset and stopped going to school. Is it our fault that we were born into this community?” Murugan questioned.

A case was registered against the teacher at the Kalavai police station on February 3 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. However, the parents alleged that no further action has been taken by the police so far.

On Monday, the aggrieved parents, accompanied by members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), submitted a petition to Ranipet Collector JU Chandrakala, pressing for the teacher's arrest. They later staged a sit-in protest at the collector's office to highlight police inaction, leading to temporary tension at the premises.

Following the protest and discussions, Collector Chandrakala assured the group that appropriate action would be taken against the accused teacher. Satisfied with the assurance, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

The incident has once again spotlighted concerns over caste-based discrimination in educational institutions, particularly in government schools, and the need for swift enforcement of laws protecting marginalized communities. Authorities have not yet commented on the specifics of the investigation or any potential disciplinary measures against the teacher.

No official response from the school administration or the teacher was available at the time of reporting. The case continues to draw attention amid calls for justice and protection for the affected student.
