For the last two days, a section of social media and pro-Telugu Desam Party media houses like ABN-Andhra Jyothy have been churning out stories portraying YSR Congress Party president and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy as a villain for opposing the plan of his sister Y S Sharmila to conduct the wedding of her daughter Anjili Reddy at the family palace in Yelahanka, Bengaluru.
Of course, there is some truth in these stories, but according to YSRCP sources, Jagan had written to Sharmila two weeks ago itself, asking her not to go ahead with the wedding at the Yelahanka Palace, as it could pose a security threat to him due to the movement of a large number of people and the circulation of photographs and videos of the premises.
Jagan wrote a letter to Sharmila on October 9, asking her to choose an alternative venue for the wedding. He pointed out that hosting a major event such as a wedding at the property would involve numerous service providers, catering staff, flower and decoration teams, event management personnel, videographers, photographers and guests entering and leaving the premises.
The YSRCP chief expressed concern that most of these people would be unfamiliar to the family and that the circulation of photographs and videos of the property and surrounding areas could pose serious security risks.
“It is not an easy decision, as I have seen Jili growing up in the palace and I only wanted nothing but the best for her. However, security and privacy considerations could not be overlooked. I would have done the same, even if it were for Harsha or Varsha,” he said.
He pointed out that he was currently living at the property and that an event of this scale would attract considerable and unnecessary attention, apart from raising security concerns.
He emphasised that the property was his home and that ensuring the safety of himself and his family was his priority.
Jagan said he was hurt that, despite conveying the very real privacy and security risks through various people, Sharmila went ahead ignoring his disapproval and concerns.
He once again appealed to Sharmila to understand his perspective and suggested that the wedding be shifted to another venue.
He said that if the family did not wish to opt for a convention centre or a destination wedding, as had been done for Raja’s wedding, he had offered the use of his Hyderabad Lotus Pond property as an alternative. He reiterated that the offer remained open.
