in Kohima, members of the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) staged a rally opposing the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) and the compulsory singing of Vande Mataram at official events. The demonstrators called for safeguarding religious freedom, constitutional rights, and India’s secular character.
Addressing the gathering, NJCF president N. Paphino clarified that the protest was not directed against India, the Constitution, or the state government, but was instead a peaceful expression of concerns over faith, identity, religious liberty, and democratic values. He stressed that Christian faith and Naga identity do not diminish patriotism, but rather coexist with a commitment to national unity and respect for constitutional principles.
The rally highlighted the community’s apprehensions that stricter FCRA provisions and mandatory patriotic practices could undermine the spirit of inclusivity and freedom, which remain central to India’s democratic ethos.
