Mandya District Emerges as Hub of Communal Clashes, Accounts for 34 of Karnataka's 70 Cases Since 2024

Data presented in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly indicates that of 54 communal riot cases booked across the state in 2024 and 2025, 29 (over 53%) occurred in Mandya. The district reported a peak of 24 cases in 2024—an election year—and five more in 2025. It remains the only district to record incidents in both years. Other districts, such as those in the coastal region (e.g., Mangaluru reporting 10 cases in 2025), have also seen tensions, but Mandya's surge stands out.

Mandya, Karnataka – Once known primarily for its agricultural prosperity and relative peace in the Old Mysuru region, Mandya district has witnessed a sharp rise in communal incidents, emerging as the epicenter of such violence in Karnataka over the past two years. According to recent data shared by the state Home Minister in the legislature, Mandya alone accounted for nearly half (48.57%) of all communal violence cases in the state since 2024, with 34 cases reported from the district out of a total of around 70 in Karnataka.

Many incidents have been linked to religious processions and festivals, particularly Ganesha idol immersions. Notable clashes include:

- The September 2024 violence in Nagamangala, where stone-pelting erupted after a Ganesha procession passed a mosque, leading to arson at shops and stalls. Police filed FIRs against over 200 people and arrested dozens.
- A similar flare-up in Maddur in September 2025 during Ganesh immersion, where stones were allegedly pelted at the procession near a mosque in the Ram Rahim Nagar area, prompting retaliatory violence. Over 21 arrests were made, and authorities imposed restrictions to restore order.

Other triggers reported in Mandya include disputes over flag-hoisting (such as an incident involving a tricolour and saffron flag in Keregodu) and Hanuman Jayanthi processions near mosques in areas like Srirangapatna. In the last five years, the district has seen around 46 communal cases, with Nagamangala taluk alone accounting for 24, followed by Maddur (10) and Srirangapatna (9).

Traditionally not viewed as a communally sensitive area like coastal Karnataka, Mandya's shift has raised concerns among observers. Some attribute the rise to organized processions routing through mixed localities, provocative slogans, and retaliatory actions, while political accusations have flown thick— with opposition parties blaming the Congress government for lax enforcement, and the ruling side emphasizing impartial action against culprits from any community. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has stated that strict action would be taken "be it Hindu or Muslim" if found guilty.

In response, the state government has announced plans to deploy a Special Action Force (SAF) in sensitive pockets of Mandya, modeled after units in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga, to better manage law and order. Additional police measures, including prohibitory orders under Section 144 in affected areas, have been enforced during festivals.

The development has sparked debate on the broader communal landscape in Karnataka, with some analysts noting a gradual shift of such tensions from coastal districts inland. Civil society groups and media reports have highlighted the need for better dialogue, regulated processions, and community-level harmony initiatives to prevent escalation.

As Mandya grapples with this new reality, local residents and authorities continue to monitor sensitive events closely. The district's transformation into a communal flashpoint underscores the challenges of maintaining peace amid religious observances in diverse areas.

This report is based on official legislative data and multiple news accounts from December 2025 to early 2026. Exact statewide totals may vary slightly across reports depending on classification of "communal" vs. general law-and-order cases.
