Karnataka Government Mandates Audit of All Adolescent Pregnancies to Address Public Health and Social Concerns

Under the Government Order (GO), Taluk Health Officers (THOs) will conduct the audits for every reported case. Both government and private health institutions must mandatorily report adolescent pregnancies on the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal. The audits will examine key factors including age at marriage, educational status of the girl, awareness of reproductive health, access to contraception, and socio-economic conditions contributing to early pregnancies.

Bengaluru, April 8, 2026: In a significant step to tackle adolescent pregnancies, the Karnataka government has issued an order making the audit of all such cases mandatory across the state. The directive, issued on Tuesday by the Health Department, requires a systematic review of pregnancies among girls aged 10 to 18 years to identify underlying causes and strengthen prevention and support mechanisms.

# Aims of the Initiative
Health officials said the move aims to:
Improve data tracking and reporting systems.
Ensure better maternal and child health care for affected adolescents.
Strengthen coordination with laws such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Address gaps in prevention efforts, including child marriages and lack of awareness.

A committee or panel is also expected to assess broader issues like early marriage and support services for the girls and their families.

# Background on the Issue
Adolescent pregnancy remains a major public health and social challenge in Karnataka. Official data from previous years has highlighted thousands of cases, with concerns over child marriages, exploitation, and inadequate reproductive health education. Recent incidents, including cases in residential schools, have underscored the need for stricter monitoring and inter-departmental action.

The government has previously taken measures such as issuing joint circulars to display helpline numbers in schools, amending child marriage laws, and forming task forces. The new mandatory audit builds on these efforts by institutionalising case-by-case reviews starting April 2026.

# Official Statements and Expectations
Officials emphasised that the audits will help protect the health rights of adolescents, reduce risks associated with early pregnancies (such as complications for both mother and child), and enable targeted interventions in high-burden areas.

Private hospitals have also been reminded to strictly report minor pregnancy cases under POCSO provisions, with warnings of legal action for non-compliance.

This initiative is expected to provide actionable insights for policymakers to enhance adolescent health programmes, improve access to education and contraception, and bolster child protection frameworks in the state.

The order comes amid ongoing efforts to align with national goals on reducing teenage pregnancies and promoting girl child welfare. Further details on the implementation timeline and reporting formats are likely to be shared by the Health Department in the coming days.
