After a viral social media video showed a man claiming he assaulted the father of a protester at Jantar Mantar during the CJP stir, the victim's daughter has released a video on X, appealing for support from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Responding to the appeal, Gandhi has offered his support to the student protester Nishu Aazad.
Victim Claims Father Assaulted, Approaches Rahul Gandhi For Justice
An individual named Swatantra Bhardwaj was seen admitting on camera that he assaulted a man named Sanjay, who was the father of a protester- now identified as Nishu- which led to swell of online outrage and political backlash. Nishu then released a video on X, alleging that she and family filed an FIR against the Bhardwaj- who is now seen admitting to the crime- but the police have taken no action in 1.5 months. She alleged that the cops were "fooling her family," and appealed to Rahul Gandhi, in search of speedy justice.
Rahul Gandhi, replying to Nishu's post, assured support and assistance in her fight for justice. Gandhi called out Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for "shielding perpetrators and indulging in brutality against student protesters." Gandhi assured Nishu that he would stand by her in this fight, and wrote, "you are not alone in this. No need to panic. I'm with you."
A row erupted over a video shared by the Cockroach Janta Party handle and also shared by the outfits co-covener Saurav Das, which shows a man named Swatantra Bhardwaj brazenly claiming he assaulted an individual named Sanjay at the Jantar Mantar protests and further claims that Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra and Union Minister Chirag Paswan were his “brothers” and backed him.
Bhardwaj, in the video alleged, that Mishra pressurised the Delhi Police to release him from the station and not press any additional charges on him. He also made claims of political favouritism.
CJP co-convenor Saurav Das, in his post on X, alleged that Sanjay, who was assaulted by Bhardwaj, had his skull cracked open, which warranted an Attempt to Murder charge in the FIR (Section 307 of IPC). But he claims, that the "Police refused to add that charge." He added, that this section would've led to his immediate arrest as it is a cognizable and non-bailable offence, and to avoid this arrest, "the Police flat out refused to add this Section."
Das also claimed that they asked for the "grievous injury" section to be added (Sec 326) which would also lead to his immediate arrest, to which "DCP Sachin Sharma and ACP Ajay Sharma flatly refused." He also added that he and his team were told to go and get a court order.
He added, "the other gang members who were accomplices of Bhardwaj have also not been identified so far, despite several of them making reels immediately after the attack and threatening Sanjay's minor daughter Nishu openly."
Das, in a blazing attack, questioned why Kapil Mishra was not made an accomplice in the FIR, "for illegally interfering with the course of justice." He also called for the resignation of the Delhi Minister, "for protecting gang members."
The Delhi Police then fact-checked Saurav Das' claim and responded to his post on X, saying, "On 23.06.2026, at Jantar Mantar, during the CJP protest, Sanjay Kumar (38), a resident of Ghaziabad, sustained a head injury by Kada worn by one of the alleged during a scuffle."
"He was medically examined by Doctors of RML Hospital, and the injuries were opined to be simple in nature. The injuries were made by kada and not by any weapon. The misinformation regarding crack in skull is not supported by facts/ MLC and is completely baseless," it said.
Chandra Shekhar Aazad, Chief of Bhim Army also reacted to the video of Swatantra Bhardwaj, He questioned why the accused was not arrested, even though the injury inflicted upon the victim was so serious. He also questioned the gap in stands between the Delhi Police and the accused himself. He said, "the police claim that Sanjay Kumar's injuries were minor and the talk of a skull fracture is baseless. But in the statement of the accused, Swatantra Bhardwaj, he himself is saying things like "7 stitches," "a near-death situation," and "it would amount to 307."
