Dubai/Bengaluru, March 18, 2026 — In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing regional conflict, Iran has issued urgent evacuation warnings for several major energy facilities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), declaring them "legitimate targets" for imminent strikes "in the coming hours," according to Iranian state media and reports from Reuters and other outlets.

The threats follow reported strikes on Iran's massive South Pars gas field — the world's largest natural gas reserve, shared with Qatar — which Tehran attributes to U.S. and Israeli forces. The attack on South Pars facilities in Asaluyeh marked a significant broadening of the conflict, shifting focus to upstream energy infrastructure for the first time since hostilities intensified.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and state-linked media named specific sites as potential targets:

- In Saudi Arabia: The Samref Refinery and the Jubail Petrochemical Complex.
- In the UAE: The Al Hosn Gas Field.
- In Qatar: The Mesaieed Petrochemical Complex, Mesaieed Holding Company facilities, and the Ras Laffan Refinery.

Semi-official Iranian outlets published lists of these locations, warning civilians and workers to evacuate immediately to avoid being caught in retaliatory actions. The warnings come amid a wider campaign where Iran has already targeted Gulf energy assets, disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz (through which roughly one-fifth of global oil passes), and conducted strikes on ports, airports, and other infrastructure in Gulf states.

Analysts view the threats as part of Tehran's strategy to impose economic pressure on the U.S. and its allies by driving up global energy prices and risking broader supply disruptions. Oil and gas markets have already seen sharp volatility, with prices surging in response to earlier attacks and the partial closure of key export routes.

Gulf nations, key U.S. partners and major global energy suppliers, have condemned the threats and reported heightened defenses. Qatar, which shares the South Pars field (known as North Field on its side), described recent strikes on Iranian-linked facilities as a "dangerous escalation" threatening regional energy security, populations, and the environment.

The conflict, now in its third week, has seen mutual targeting of energy infrastructure, including prior Iranian drone and missile strikes that forced shutdowns at facilities like Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura refinery and Qatar's Ras Laffan LNG hub — the world's largest liquefied natural gas export site. Previous incidents have led to precautionary halts in production, force majeure declarations on exports, and rerouting of tankers.

No immediate strikes on the newly threatened sites were reported as of late Wednesday, but the explicit evacuation calls have raised alarms about potential direct hits on critical hydrocarbon infrastructure. Global energy markets remain on edge, with experts warning that further escalation could severely impact worldwide oil and gas supplies.

Neither the U.S. nor Israel has immediately commented on the latest Iranian warnings, though the broader conflict stems from ongoing military exchanges involving strikes on Iranian assets and retaliatory actions across the region.

This developing situation continues to heighten tensions in the Persian Gulf, with implications for global energy stability and economic security.
