Newark, New Jersey – In a significant milestone for diversity in the U.S. judiciary, Lubna Qazi-Chowdhry, an Indian-origin attorney, has been appointed as an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) in New Jersey, becoming the first Muslim woman to serve in this role in the state.

Governor Philip D. Murphy nominated Qazi-Chowdhry on January 6, 2026, recognizing her extensive legal experience and contributions to the state's legal system. The New Jersey State Senate confirmed the nomination, and she was officially sworn in on January 22, 2026, by New Jersey Supreme Court Associate Justice Rachel Wainer Apter. She has since begun her judicial service in Newark.
