New Delhi, April 30, 2026: India has been ranked 157th out of 180 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index 2026, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), highlighting growing concerns over the safety and independence of journalists in the country.

Sharp Decline in Ranking

According to the RSF report, India has slipped six places from its 2025 rank of 151, continuing a troubling downward trend in recent years.

The global watchdog noted that the overall condition of press freedom has worsened worldwide, with more than half of the 180 countries now falling into “difficult” or “very serious” categories—marking the lowest global average score in 25 years.

Why India’s Ranking Matters

The World Press Freedom Index evaluates countries based on factors such as:

  • Safety of journalists
  • Media independence
  • Legal and political environment
  • Economic pressures on news organisations

India’s low ranking places it among countries where journalists face heightened risks and constraints, raising concerns about the functioning of the media in the world’s largest democracy.

Key Concerns Highlighted by RSF

RSF flagged several issues contributing to India’s poor ranking:

  • Rising violence against journalists
  • Concentration of media ownership
  • Increasing political alignment of news outlets
  • Use of laws that can restrict or criminalise journalism

The report described the situation as a “crisis” for press freedom, noting that journalists face pressures from both political and economic fronts.

Global Context

At the top of the index are countries like:

  • Norway
  • Netherlands
  • Estonia
  • Denmark
  • Sweden

Meanwhile, the worst-performing nations include:

  • Eritrea
  • North Korea
  • Iran
  • China

RSF also warned that journalism is increasingly being criminalised globally, with legal pressures emerging as the most significant factor affecting press freedom in 2026.

Trend Over the Years

India’s position has fluctuated but remains consistently low:

  • 2023: 161st
  • 2024: 159th
  • 2025: 151st
  • 2026: 157th

This indicates structural challenges rather than temporary setbacks in the media landscape.

Conclusion

The latest ranking has reignited debate over freedom of expression, media independence, and journalist safety in India. As global press freedom declines, experts say strengthening institutional protections and ensuring a safe working environment for journalists will be critical to reversing the trend.
