Lucknow, April 1, 2026: Rinku Singh Rahi, a 2022-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has resigned from the service, alleging that he was sidelined and denied meaningful responsibilities for a prolonged period despite drawing a salary.

In his resignation letter submitted on Tuesday, Rahi claimed he was kept in an “attached” position at the UP Revenue Board in Lucknow without any active posting or opportunity to serve the public. He reportedly described the prolonged idleness as frustrating and contrary to his desire to contribute meaningfully to governance.

Rahi first shot to fame in July 2025, just hours after assuming charge as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Powayan tehsil in Shahjahanpur district. During an inspection of the tehsil premises on his very first day, he noticed unhygienic conditions, including people urinating in public. He instructed a clerk or individuals involved to perform sit-ups as a form of on-the-spot correction for the lapse in sanitation and discipline.

When local lawyers protested the action, viewing it as humiliating, Rahi took an unusual step to defuse the situation: he publicly held his ears and performed sit-ups himself, accepting moral responsibility as the senior officer and emphasizing that rules should apply equally. A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, drawing both praise for his humility and accountability, as well as criticism for “unbecoming” conduct.

Just 36 hours after taking charge, Rahi was relieved of his SDM post and attached to the UP Revenue Board in Lucknow. Many viewed the swift transfer as administrative action following the controversy, effectively sidelining him from field duties. Sources indicated that the government took note of the public gesture, citing possible violation of All India Services Conduct Rules.

Rahi’s career has been marked by both courage and controversy. Before clearing the UPSC exam and joining the IAS, he served as a Provincial Civil Service (PCS) officer in the Welfare Department in Muzaffarnagar. There, he exposed a major Rs 100 crore scam and survived an assassination attempt in which he was shot at seven times. His resilience and commitment to integrity earned him respect in administrative circles.

Following the Shahjahanpur incident, Rahi reportedly remained in the attached post without substantive work, which he cited as the primary reason for his resignation. In his letter, he is said to have highlighted how being paid without responsibilities amounted to a form of systemic inefficiency.

The development has sparked discussions on social media and among civil service aspirants about the challenges faced by upright officers in the bureaucracy, including transfers, sidelining, and resistance to unconventional approaches to public service.

As of now, the Uttar Pradesh government has not issued an official statement on the resignation. Rahi’s move comes amid broader debates on administrative reforms and the space for proactive officers in the system.

The officer, previously hailed by some for his hands-on style and willingness to lead by example on issues like cleanliness, now exits the service raising questions about whether the system rewards or restrains such initiatives.
