- ECI announced Special Summary Revision in six states/UTs.
- Young citizens can apply for voter registration in advance.
- Final electoral rolls to be published by January 21, 2027.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a fresh revision of electoral rolls in six states and Union Territories, giving young citizens who will turn 18 in 2027 an opportunity to apply for voter registration in advance.
The Special Summary Revision (SSR) will cover Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim. The exercise aims to ensure that eligible citizens, particularly young and first-time voters, are included in the electoral rolls.
The announcement comes as the Election Commission continues its wider exercise to update voter lists across the country, with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) drawing political attention over allegations of wrongful voter deletions.
Who Can Apply For Voter Registration In Advance?
In a significant provision for prospective voters, the Commission has allowed advance applications from citizens who will turn 18 on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027.
This means those who are not yet eligible to vote on January 1, 2027, will not have to wait until their 18th birthday to submit an application. Their applications will be processed in the respective quarters when they become eligible.
January 1, 2027, will remain the qualifying date for the main revision exercise.
Election Commission's Voter List Revision Schedule
The Commission has announced the following key dates for the revision:
- November 20, 2026: Rationalisation and rearrangement of polling stations to be completed.
- November 30, 2026: Draft electoral rolls to be published.
- November 30–December 30, 2026: Period for submitting claims and objections.
- January 16, 2027: Deadline for disposal of claims and objections.
- January 21, 2027: Final electoral rolls to be published.
What Is The Difference Between SSR And SIR?
The Special Summary Revision (SSR) is an exercise to update existing electoral rolls by adding eligible voters, correcting details and addressing objections.
It is different from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), which involves a more extensive verification of existing voter records. The latest SSR announcement is aimed at improving enrolment and updating voter details in the six identified states and UTs.
The Commission has also directed the respective Chief Secretaries to ensure adequate manpower and resources so that the revision is completed within the prescribed timeline.
Where Has The Special Intensive Revision Been Conducted?
The latest announcement comes after the Election Commission initiated the third phase of its Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, covering 16 states and three Union Territories, according to the information provided in the Commission's earlier schedule.
The exercise involved verification of voter records across the participating regions. Delhi, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were among the jurisdictions included in the wider SIR exercise.
The latest SSR announcement is a separate step in the process of updating electoral rolls and providing eligible citizens with an opportunity to register ahead of the 2027 qualifying dates.
