A controversy has erupted in Goa following alleged objectionable remarks made by Gautam Kattar against St. Francis Xavier, a revered figure in the Christian community. The incident has drawn widespread criticism and sparked tensions, with leaders calling for strict action.
The remarks were reportedly made during a Bhagwan Parashuram Jayanti event held in April 2026. According to reports, Gautam Kattar referred to St. Francis Xavier as a “terrorist” during a public gathering in Vasco, which many have condemned as highly offensive and insensitive.
The statement has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Christian community. Several political leaders, including members of the Congress party, have filed police complaints, leading to the case being transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation.
Opposition leaders such as Yuri Alemao and Valmiki Naik have strongly condemned the remarks, stating that such statements threaten communal harmony and social peace in the state.
St. Francis Xavier is a prominent Roman Catholic missionary who played a crucial role in spreading Christianity across India, the Malay Archipelago, and Japan. He is widely venerated as the Patron Saint of Goa.
Reacting strongly to the issue, Stany Pinto, Founder State President of the Karnataka Christa Sanghatane, stated that the remarks have caused deep pain to the entire Christian community.
