Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has already achieved one major political goal. After sidelining several senior leaders within the Congress party, he secured the Chief Minister’s post and is now close to completing two-and-a-half years in office. Ever since becoming the Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy has maintained notably cordial relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, that does not mean the Centre has fulfilled every request made by the Telangana government under his leadership.
There has also been political speculation for several months that the Congress high command kept Revanth Reddy at a distance because of his closeness to Modi. On multiple public occasions, Revanth Reddy himself stated that he views Prime Minister Modi as an elder brother when it comes to the interests of the state. Even so, political circles have long believed that Revanth Reddy has a separate political agenda of his own.
In particular, there has been considerable discussion that he is playing a “safe game” in maintaining friendly ties with Modi and BJP leaders. Unlike several other Congress Chief Ministers, Revanth Reddy has taken a distinctly different approach toward both the BJP and Modi. With the Congress high command currently weaker than in the past, it is also being seen as largely ignoring these developments in his case.
The remarks made by Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Hyderabad on Sunday have now become a major political talking point. Addressing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy publicly, Modi said, “Come with me... I will take you wherever you want to go.” These comments have triggered intense debate over the political agenda behind the Prime Minister’s statement.
Some political leaders believe that Modi has effectively “booked” Revanth Reddy politically with those remarks. Congress leaders also feel that these comments could make the party high command view Revanth Reddy with even greater suspicion. At the same time, there is another argument within Congress circles — that Revanth Reddy has always operated with his own political agenda, and that is why he appeared comfortable and even pleased with Modi’s remarks. However, political observers are now actively debating what Revanth Reddy’s next target could be after already becoming Chief Minister, and how Modi could help him move toward that goal.
Meanwhile, although the BJP has been registering consecutive victories in several key states across the country, the party continues to face a leadership crisis in Telangana. Even BJP leaders themselves believe that despite having significant opportunities to expand in the state, the party has not been moving in the right direction for some reason. In this context, Prime Minister Modi’s comments have gained considerable political significance.
