The Centre on Friday informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally supervising the review and re-examination process of NEET-UG following allegations of a paper leak that sparked nationwide outrage among students, parents, educators, and opposition parties. The controversy began after claims surfaced that portions of the medical entrance exam had been circulated before the test through organised cheating networks and social media channels.

While students demanded transparency, accountability, and a fair re-test, the government defended its response by cancelling the examination, launching investigations, and promising reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA). During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned repeated lapses in India’s examination system and sought long-term reforms to prevent future leaks.

NEET Controversy Sparks Nationwide Outrage

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG), one of India’s most competitive medical entrance examinations, has come under intense scrutiny after allegations of a paper leak surfaced ahead of the exam. Reports claimed that question papers and answer keys were circulated through encrypted messaging groups and organised cheating networks, triggering widespread concern among students, parents, and educators.

As alleged evidence and testimonies spread online, public outrage intensified across the country. Students accused authorities of failing to safeguard the integrity of the examination, while protests erupted in several cities demanding cancellation of the exam, a transparent investigation, and accountability from the National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts NEET.

Supreme Court Raises Questions Over Accountability

The controversy soon reached the Supreme Court through multiple petitions challenging the fairness of the examination process. During Friday’s hearing, the apex court expressed concern over recurring paper leak incidents in competitive examinations and questioned whether lessons had been learnt from earlier controversies. The bench observed that such failures deeply affect students who dedicate years of effort and sacrifice to these examinations.

The Court also questioned accountability within the NTA, asking who would ultimately be responsible for lapses in examination security. Judges stressed that repeated irregularities cannot be addressed through temporary measures alone and called for structural reforms in the system. The bench directed the Centre and the NTA to submit detailed plans explaining how future examinations would be safeguarded against malpractice and leaks.

PM Modi Is Personally Supervising

The hearing drew national attention when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally supervising the handling of the NEET crisis.According to the Centre, the Prime Minister’s Office is closely monitoring both the investigation into the alleged leak and the arrangements for the proposed re-examination.

The government argued that this reflects the seriousness with which the issue is being addressed at the highest level. The statement quickly became a major political talking point. Supporters of the government viewed the Prime Minister’s direct involvement as reassurance that corrective measures would be implemented swiftly. Critics, however, questioned why repeated examination controversies continue despite earlier promises of reform.

NTA Faces Sharp Criticism

The National Testing Agency has faced criticism from students, legal experts, and education activists over its handling of the examination process.

Questions have been raised about examination security, logistical vulnerabilities, oversight failures, and delayed responses after the allegations surfaced. The Supreme Court itself criticised what it described as “adhocism” in the functioning of the agency and stressed the need for institutional accountability.

Many experts believe the crisis highlights deeper structural weaknesses in India’s examination infrastructure, where high-stakes tests remain vulnerable to organised malpractice and corruption.

Government Promises Reforms

In response to the controversy, the Centre outlined several reforms aimed at strengthening examination security and restoring public confidence. These include enhanced digital surveillance systems, stricter transportation and storage protocols for question papers, real-time monitoring of examination centres, stronger cybersecurity safeguards, and institutional restructuring within the NTA.

The government also indicated that NEET could gradually move towards a computer-based testing format in the coming years to reduce risks associated with physical paper distribution. Officials argued that the reforms are intended not only to address the present controversy but also to modernise India’s broader examination system.

Students Continue To Bear The Burden

While the legal and political battle continues, students remain at the centre of the crisis. For many aspirants, preparing for NEET involves years of intensive study, financial sacrifice, and emotional stress. The cancellation of the examination and uncertainty over re-testing schedules have left many anxious, frustrated, and emotionally exhausted.

Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions from students expressing concerns about mental health, academic delays, and declining trust in public institutions. Many aspirants argued that repeated paper leak controversies unfairly punish honest students while organised cheating networks continue exploiting weaknesses in the system.

The Logical Indian’s Perspective

The NEET-UG paper leak controversy reflects more than just an examination failure — it exposes the growing trust deficit in systems meant to ensure equal opportunity for young people. While the Centre’s assurance that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally supervising the matter signals urgency, meaningful accountability must go beyond statements and short-term corrective measures.

Students deserve an examination system rooted in transparency, fairness, and integrity, where honest aspirants are not forced to suffer because of institutional lapses or organised corruption.
