Britain Implements Visa Crackdown Amid Rising Anti-Immigration Sentiment

Home Office figures cited in the announcement show that 39% of the roughly 100,000 asylum claims made in 2025 came from individuals who had first arrived on legal migration routes. A sharp rise in such claims between 2021 and September 2025 was dominated by students from the four countries now targeted.

London, March 4, 2026 — The UK government has imposed an unprecedented “emergency brake” on visas for nationals from four countries, halting study visas from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, and work visas for Afghans, as Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood accused migrants from these nations of exploiting legal routes to claim asylum.

Announced on Tuesday evening, the measures mark the first time Britain has suspended entire visa routes in this manner. They will be formally introduced on Thursday alongside further tightening of the asylum system, including reviews of refugee status every 30 months.

“Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused,” Mahmood said. “That is why I am taking the unprecedented decision to refuse visas for those nationals seeking to exploit our generosity.”

Home Office figures cited in the announcement show that 39% of the roughly 100,000 asylum claims made in 2025 came from individuals who had first arrived on legal migration routes. A sharp rise in such claims between 2021 and September 2025 was dominated by students from the four countries now targeted.

The move comes amid sustained public concern over immigration levels, which have strained housing, public services and community cohesion, according to ministers. Opinion polls have shown strong support for stricter controls, with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK consistently leading or running close to Labour on the issue. The government’s tougher stance also follows Labour’s loss in last month’s Gorton and Denton by-election to a progressive challenger, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration to deliver visible results on border control.

The visa suspensions form part of a wider package of reforms introduced since Labour took office in 2024. Net migration has already fallen sharply — by nearly two-thirds in some recent periods — after earlier measures including higher salary thresholds for skilled workers, restrictions on dependants for students and care workers, and the closure of several lower-skilled routes. Plans to double the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain (settled status) to 10 years for many migrants are also advancing, with retrospective application under consideration.

On asylum, newly recognised refugees will now receive only 30 months of protection instead of the previous five-year grant, after which their status will be reviewed. Those whose home countries are judged safe will be expected to return, while others may apply to switch to mainstream visa routes.

Critics within Labour’s own ranks have expressed unease at the pace and tone of the crackdown, warning it risks alienating traditional supporters. However, Mahmood has insisted that failing to address public anxiety would pave the way for a far-right government. “The level of illegal and irregular migration is creating division within communities across the country,” she has previously warned, adding that unchecked abuse could erode support for the entire asylum system.

Immigration lawyers and refugee charities have raised concerns that blanket bans could unfairly penalise genuine students and workers, but the Home Office maintains the measures are narrowly targeted at documented patterns of abuse and will be kept under review.

The announcement comes as the government prepares new legislation to strengthen border enforcement, including faster deportations and expanded powers against people-smuggling networks. Officials say the package is designed to restore public confidence that the UK’s generosity is reserved for those genuinely in need.

With local elections approaching and Reform UK maintaining a double-digit lead in many national polls, the visa crackdown is widely seen as Labour’s latest attempt to reclaim the political initiative on an issue that has dominated British politics for more than a decade.
