BJP’s Bengal Breakthrough Amid Voter Deletion Row and Allegations of Institutional Misuse

Kolkata | May 2026

In a historic political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to form the government in West Bengal for the first time, ending over a decade of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Early trends show the BJP leading comfortably in a majority of the 294 assembly seats, marking a major breakthrough in one of India’s most politically significant states.

However, the victory has unfolded amid intense controversy, with opposition parties alleging large-scale voter disenfranchisement, misuse of central agencies, and bias in electoral institutions.

Voter Deletion Controversy: 90+ Lakh Names Removed

One of the most contentious issues during the election was the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

  • Around 9 million (90 lakh) voters were removed from the rolls—nearly 12% of the electorate.
  • Over 2.7 million cases remain disputed, with many individuals claiming wrongful deletion despite valid documents.

The TMC and opposition groups alleged that the deletions disproportionately affected minorities and marginalized communities, potentially influencing the electoral outcome.

On the other hand, the BJP and the Election Commission defended the exercise, stating it was aimed at removing duplicate, deceased, and illegal entries, particularly linked to alleged illegal immigration.

Allegations Against Central Agencies and EC

The election campaign saw repeated accusations from opposition parties that central agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and other institutions were used to target political rivals.

  • TMC leaders accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of acting as a “puppet” and failing to ensure neutrality.
  • There were also claims of “gross electoral fraud”, backed by videos and complaints submitted to poll authorities.

Conversely, the BJP alleged that the TMC engaged in voter intimidation and irregularities at polling booths, highlighting the highly polarized nature of the contest.

The Election Commission maintained that strict monitoring, repoll provisions, and disciplinary actions (including suspension of officials) were implemented to ensure fairness.

Ground Strategy: How BJP Expanded Its Base

Despite the controversies, analysts point to several strategic factors behind BJP’s rise:

1.

Organizational Strength

The BJP deployed a booth-level “Panna Pramukh” system, ensuring voter outreach at the grassroots.

2.

Strong Leadership Factor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign and national visibility played a central role in mobilizing voters across regions.

3.

Welfare and Development Promises

The party’s manifesto promised:

  • Direct cash support for women
  • Job creation and industrial growth
  • Anti-corruption measures and governance reforms

4.

Identity and Security Narrative

Issues such as illegal immigration, border security, and cultural identity were central to BJP’s campaign messaging, resonating with sections of the electorate.

5.

Anti-Incumbency Against TMC

After more than a decade in power, the TMC faced voter fatigue, local grievances, and criticism over governance issues—factors that contributed to the shift.

Clashes, Complaints, and Election-Day Tensions

The electoral process was marked by multiple flashpoints:

  • Allegations of EVM tampering, leading to possible repolls in some areas.
  • Claims of strongroom security breaches and procedural lapses.
  • Discovery of suspicious items near counting centers, triggering political confrontations.

These incidents deepened mistrust between major political players and raised concerns over electoral integrity.

Opposition Weakness and Fragmentation

Political observers also note that the opposition alliance failed to present a united front:

  • Internal divisions weakened coordination.
  • Campaign messaging lacked coherence compared to BJP’s centralized strategy.
  • Regional parties struggled to counter BJP’s national narrative.

Election Commission’s Stand

The Election Commission has consistently rejected allegations of bias, asserting that:

  • Electoral rolls were revised as per legal procedures.
  • Security forces and observers ensured free and fair polling.
  • Any verified irregularities would lead to corrective action, including repolls.

Conclusion

The BJP’s expected victory in West Bengal represents a major political realignment, achieved through a mix of strong organization, leadership-driven campaigning, and issue-based mobilization.

At the same time, serious allegations regarding voter deletion, institutional neutrality, and misuse of agencies remain unresolved, and are likely to be debated in courts and political forums in the coming months.

The 2026 West Bengal election, therefore, stands not only as a turning point in state politics but also as a flashpoint in the broader national debate on electoral transparency and democratic institutions.
