BENGALURU: Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday accused Opposition parties of disrupting the proceedings of the Karnataka Legislature as they lacked the courage to take on the Congress government on the floor of the House.

Shivakumar alleged that the Opposition was targeting the Congress government out of resentment over the emergence of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe leaders within the party. He said 16 SC/ST legislators have been elected from the Congress and said the Opposition was unhappy because it had failed to produce such leaders.

Reacting to the BJP’s plans to stage a protest at Vidhana Soudha on Monday demanding the resignation of Planning and Statistics Minister B Nagendra, he said, “There is a law of the land. There is an opportunity to protest within the legal framework. But today they are indulging in hooliganism and disrupting the proceedings without even giving a notice.”

He said there was nothing wrong in the Opposition staging a protest, but it should give notice and seek a discussion on the issue. “They do not have the patience to discuss why the minister should resign,” he said.
