Karnataka High Court Grants Bail to Former MLA Vinay Kulkarni, Keeps Conviction in BJP Leader Murder Case in Abeyance
Bengaluru, July 31: In a significant legal development, the Karnataka High Court has granted bail to former Karnataka minister and Congress leader Vinay Kulkarni, who was convicted in the 2016 murder case of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda. The court has also ordered that the conviction remain in abeyance pending the hearing of his appeal.
Vinay Kulkarni had been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court after being found guilty in the sensational murder case of Yogesh Gowda, a BJP leader and former Dharwad Zilla Panchayat member who was killed in June 2016. The case, which attracted widespread political attention in Karnataka, was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court, while hearing Kulkarni’s appeal against the conviction, granted interim relief by suspending the sentence and allowing his release on bail. The court also kept the conviction in abeyance, enabling the former MLA to pursue legal remedies until the final disposal of the appeal.
Kulkarni, a prominent Congress leader from Dharwad district and former minister in the Karnataka government, had consistently maintained that the prosecution’s case was not supported by reliable evidence. His counsel argued before the High Court that several witnesses had turned hostile during the trial and that the conviction required a detailed re-examination.
The murder of Yogesh Gowda had become one of Karnataka’s most high-profile political criminal cases. Following a prolonged investigation and trial spanning nearly a decade, a special court in Bengaluru convicted Kulkarni and several co-accused earlier this year.
The High Court’s latest order is expected to have political significance in Karnataka, especially in Dharwad district, where Kulkarni remains an influential leader. However, legal experts note that the suspension of conviction is only an interim measure and the final outcome will depend on the High Court’s decision on the appeal.
The CBI is likely to contest the relief granted to Kulkarni, while the matter continues to remain under judicial consideration.
