Bhopal News: 2 Lakh Voters Set for Deletion from Electoral Rolls; Huzur Tops List, Unmapped Voters to Get Reclamation Opportunity

Adding complexity to the process is the category of "unmapped voters," numbering 88,972 (4.19% of the electorate). These individuals reside at their registered addresses but are unable to trace their family names in the 2003 baseline voter lists, often due to incomplete historical data or migration within the same locality. Huzur again leads here with 22,925 unmapped cases, while Bhopal Uttar has the fewest at 5,475.

Bhopal, December 3, 2025 – In a major cleanup drive ahead of upcoming elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to delete over 2 lakh names from Bhopal's voter list as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The move, aimed at ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the voter database, has drawn attention to the Huzur assembly constituency, which faces the highest number of deletions.

The draft electoral rolls, scheduled for publication on December 16, will exclude 2,02,341 voters – accounting for 9.52% of Bhopal district's total electorate of 21.25 lakh. These deletions span five primary categories: voters marked as absent, those who have shifted residences, deceased individuals, duplicates, and those who refused to sign verification forms.

Huzur assembly segment bears the brunt of this exercise, with 52,560 voters (13.58% of its total) slated for removal – the highest among the district's seven constituencies. In stark contrast, Berasia records the lowest deletions at 13,582 voters (5.35%). This disparity highlights urban-rural variations in voter mobility and record-keeping challenges within Bhopal.

Reassuring eligible citizens, Bhuvan Gupta, Deputy District Election Officer for Bhopal, emphasized that no one will be disenfranchised solely for lacking 2003 family linkages. "No eligible voter will be deprived of voting rights merely because they cannot locate the names of their family members in the 2003 list. They will be given an opportunity to prove their claim," Gupta stated. Unmapped voters can submit claims for inclusion during the post-draft claims and objections period, provided they furnish necessary documents such as proof of residence and identity.

The SIR initiative, launched to modernize and purify electoral rolls, involves door-to-door verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs). Fieldwork for this revision concludes on December 11, with digitization of enumeration forms progressing steadily at nearly 70% completion. As of Wednesday afternoon, 14.80 lakh forms had been digitized district-wide, led by Berasia at 95% and trailed by Bhopal Dakshin-Paschim at 59.88%.

This exercise is part of a nationwide push by the ECI to eliminate inaccuracies ahead of key polls, ensuring only genuine voters participate. District officials urge residents to check their status proactively and prepare documents to avoid last-minute hurdles.

For updates on the draft rolls and claim procedures, voters are advised to visit local election offices or the ECI's official portal. The claims window opens immediately after the December 16 publication, underscoring the urgency for affected individuals to act swiftly.
