Australia has expanded biometric requirements for visa applicants in India from Monday, October 26, with some applicants now required to provide fingerprints and facial images as part of the application process.
The new rules apply to Australian visa applications lodged on or after October 26, 2026. Visas already granted and applications submitted before the effective date will not be affected, according to a report by ANI, which cited a media release issued by the Australian High Commission in India.
The Department of Home Affairs, which manages Australia's visa processes, will notify applicants if they need to provide biometric information and explain how to complete the process. Applicants will generally receive the instructions by email, either directly or through their authorised agent.
WHY HAS AUSTRALIA EXPANDED BIOMETRICS?
The Australian government said the move aims to strengthen identity verification, reduce fraud and protect legitimate applicants from identity misuse, the ANI report mentioned.
Biometrics provide a way to verify an individual's identity and strengthen the integrity of the country's migration system. Australia already collects biometric information from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries, and the expansion brings India into the programme.
“The people-to-people links between Australia and India have never been stronger,” the Australian High Commission said, adding that it wanted the visa process to remain secure, efficient and trusted as more Indians travel to Australia to visit, study, work and build connections.
WILL NEW RULES DELAY VISA PROCESSING?
The Australian government said the expanded biometric requirements were not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the required steps promptly after receiving notification.
It also said biometric information would be managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws. Personal information would be processed and transmitted through encrypted channels, with safeguards to ensure it is handled securely.
Applicants have been advised to follow instructions issued by the Department of Home Affairs and use official websites when arranging biometric collection. The government clarified that purchasing optional services from service providers would not influence visa processing times or the outcome of a visa application.
