Alberta, Canada — When most people think of recovery after an injury, they imagine rest and rehabilitation. For DonnaJean Wilde, however, it became the start of an extraordinary journey that would lead her to become a Guinness World Record holder for the longest abdominal plank by a woman — an astonishing 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 11 seconds

Wilde, a retired high school vice principal and mother of five from Alberta, Canada, achieved this record at age 58, surrounded by a cheering crowd of family, friends, and former students. Her twelve grandchildren were front row and center, watching as she held firm through hours of physical and mental endurance

From Broken Wrist to Global Recognition

DonnaJean’s remarkable journey began more than a decade earlier after she slipped in a school gym and broke her wrist. Unable to run or lift weights, she looked for alternative ways to stay active. During a lighthearted family planking contest, she discovered she could hold a plank position — even with a cast on. That one-minute plank sparked a daily habit that evolved into hours-long endurance sessions

“It was something physical that I could still do,” Wilde recalled. “Those few minutes became my foundation for everything that came after.” Over time, planking became her form of meditation and productivity — she even completed her master’s degree while planking.

Training the Mind as Much as the Body

Preparing for a four-and-a-half-hour plank required both discipline and creativity. Wilde trained daily for up to six hours, often dividing her sessions into two three-hour blocks. During long holds, she filled her time with reading, listening to podcasts, and responding to emails, describing it as a “gift of time.”

She also lives with transverse myelitis, a condition that causes chronic pain and numbness in her hands and arms — the very body parts she relies on for balance. Her husband, Randy, believes this challenge actually strengthened her resilience: “That chronic pain she endures every day helped her learn to plank through discomfort. She’s always been officially amazing,” he said

The Record-Breaking Moment

On March 21, 2024, Wilde broke the previous women’s plank record by ten minutes, surpassing fellow Canadian Dana Glowacka’s 2019 time. The event took place inside Magrath High School — the very building where she had once served as vice principal. The atmosphere was electric, with friends, colleagues, and family members witnessing what Wilde later called an “overwhelming dream.”

“The first two hours went by quickly,” she said. “But the last hour was the most challenging. My elbows and quads were on fire, but I just focused on breathing, staying calm, and not shaking.”

A Role Model Defying Age and Limitation

Now in her 60s, Wilde continues to plank for several hours a day as part of her regular routine. She describes planking as more than just exercise — it has become a cornerstone of her mental health, posture, and confidence. Her message to others is simple yet powerful: start small.

“Anybody can do it,” she said. “If you start with one minute and build slowly, those small efforts add up. It’s called the aggregation of marginal gains — slowly, then suddenly, you’re stronger than you ever imagined.”

Age Is Only a Number

Wilde’s story has resonated worldwide, not just as an athletic feat but as a testament to resilience, positivity, and purpose at any stage of life. She credits her grandchildren and family as her biggest motivation: “I want to stay active, keep up with them, and live every day with energy and gratitude. I may be 60 on paper, but I don’t feel any age at all — just happy to be alive and moving.”

DonnaJean Wilde’s record isn’t just about physical endurance. It’s a symbol of how age, injury, or circumstance need not define what’s possible. With persistence, creativity, and heart, she proves that it’s never too late to break barriers — or records.
