The government is set to introduce mandatory biometric Aadhaar authentication for domestic LPG consumers seeking subsidised refills from 1 October 2026.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the move is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG reaches genuine and eligible households, whilst preventing the diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.
As of 19 September, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9 per cent of the total, had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication. These consumers will not need to take any further action and can continue booking refills as before. The government extended the original June deadline multiple times before finalising the October implementation date.
Consumers who have not yet completed the authentication process have several options.
The authentication can be completed during LPG refill delivery, with the delivery person using the Oil Marketing Company mobile application, or consumers can visit their LPG distributor's showroom to complete the process. Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas customers can use HP PAY for self-authentication.
However, they will not be barred from buying LPG but will not receive the subsidy.
Such consumers will be supplied 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders at market prices, subject to availability with the concerned OMC.
The government faces mounting financial pressure on LPG subsidies.
Accumulated under-recoveries of public sector OMCs on domestic LPG exceeded Rs 62,000 crore as of August 31, 2026, while the government is providing OMC compensation of Rs 30,000 crore during FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. The authentication drive has been running nationwide since October 2023.
