Chennai, February 23, 2026 — The Election Commission of India (ECI) today published the final electoral roll for Tamil Nadu following the completion of a comprehensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, resulting in the deletion of 97.37 lakh voter names from the rolls. The state's total electorate now stands at 5.67 crore (5,67,07,380 voters).

Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik announced the figures during a press conference in Chennai. She explained that prior to the SIR process, which began in late October 2025 with reference to January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, Tamil Nadu had 6.41 crore electors (approximately 6,41,14,587). The deletions were carried out under various categories after detailed verification and scrutiny, including cases of deceased voters, permanent migration, absentees, duplicates, and other ineligible entries.

During the SIR, 7.40 lakh new voters in the 18-19 age bracket were added to the rolls. Some reports indicate a net reduction of around 74 lakh (or nearly 70 lakh in aggregated terms) from the pre-SIR figure after accounting for additions and further adjustments post-draft roll stage. The draft electoral roll, released earlier, had already reflected a significant portion of these deletions, with further refinements made based on claims, objections, and verifications.

The final roll includes 2,77,38,925 male voters, 2,89,60,838 female voters, and 7,617 third-gender voters. Notably, more women (around 49.9 lakh) were removed compared to men (around 47.3 lakh) in certain aggregated analyses, though official statements focused on overall categories rather than gender breakdowns for deletions.

The SIR aimed to ensure the electoral roll's accuracy and integrity ahead of future elections, including potential Assembly polls in the state. Urban areas such as Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruppur reportedly saw higher numbers of deletions.

Patnaik emphasized that continuous updation of the electoral roll will begin immediately. Voters whose names were deleted or who require inclusions, corrections, or other changes can apply through standard processes, including submitting Form 6 for new enrollments or addressing grievances via local Electoral Registration Officers (EROs). The updated electoral roll is available for public viewing on the CEO Tamil Nadu portal (elections.tn.gov.in) and at local offices.

Voters are encouraged to check their names in the final roll and take necessary action promptly to ensure they can exercise their franchise without issues. The ECI has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean and error-free electoral database as a cornerstone of democratic integrity.
