Silchar, Assam, February 25, 2026: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of 7-8 men in front of her fiancé on the Ramnagar bypass road (near Chengkoorie/Chengkuri Road area) in Silchar on the night of February 19, police said. The accused also allegedly extorted ₹10,000 from the couple after the assault.

According to the survivor’s complaint filed at Silchar Sadar Police Station, she and her fiancé were sitting in their car on the bypass road when a Mahindra Thar/SUV carrying the group of men approached them. The men questioned the couple, blocked their vehicle, dragged the fiancé a short distance away, and restrained him at knifepoint. They then allegedly took turns sexually assaulting the woman inside the car in front of her partner. No passers-by were present at the isolated spot to intervene.

After the assault, the group allegedly forced the woman to transfer ₹10,000 via UPI to one of the accused’s accounts. Some reports also mention they took her gold ring.

Cachar police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including those pertaining to gang-rape, criminal conspiracy, criminal intimidation, assault on a woman, and dacoity. The survivor was sent for medical examination at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, and her statement was recorded.

Arrests and Investigation
One person, identified as Nilotpal Das (25), a resident of the Ashram Road/Tapoban Nagar area in Silchar, has been arrested after the victim identified him. Some reports, including from NDTV, mention a second arrest — Subol Das (27), also from Ashram Road — bringing the total to two. Cachar Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das confirmed that at least one accused is in custody and a manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects. Police are probing both the rape and extortion angles.

The incident came to light after it went viral on social media on February 24-25, prompting widespread outrage. Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev (Trinamool Congress) demanded swift justice and criticised the law-and-order situation in the state.

Additional SP (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal earlier stated that the investigation is in its preliminary stage and several aspects of the complaint are under scrutiny. Police have appealed for calm and assured a thorough probe.

This is a developing story. Further details on the medical report and additional arrests are awaited. The victim’s identity has been withheld as per norms in sexual assault cases.
