Brutal Murder of Iraqi Christian TikToker Shocks France: Ashur Sarnaya Stabbed to Death While Livestreaming Faith

Lyon, France – September 21, 2025 – A horrific act of violence has shaken the city of Lyon and reverberated across the globe, as Ashur Sarnaya, a 45-year-old disabled Iraqi Christian refugee and TikTok evangelist, was brutally stabbed to death while livestreaming a message of faith on the evening of September 10. The attack, captured in real-time on social media, has sparked widespread outrage, reignited debates over religious persecution in Europe, and raised urgent questions about the safety of vulnerable refugee communities.

A Life of Faith and Resilience

Ashur Sarnaya, an Assyrian Christian from Iraq, fled his homeland in 2014 with his family after the Islamic State (ISIS) swept through Ankawa, a predominantly Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian district in Erbil, targeting religious minorities in a genocidal campaign. Disabled and reliant on a wheelchair, Sarnaya sought asylum in France, settling in Lyon’s 9th arrondissement with his sister. In France, he rebuilt his life around his Catholic faith, using TikTok under the handle “Ashur Love” to share Arabic-language prayers, hymns, and testimonies that resonated with thousands of followers worldwide. His content often included bold critiques of radical Islamic ideologies, a stance that drew both admiration and vitriol, including relentless online harassment and death threats via comments, private messages, and anonymous phone calls.

Sarnaya’s outspokenness had already made him a target. In March 2025, he survived a physical assault, which he attributed to his religious activism. His TikTok account faced repeated suspensions due to mass reporting by users offended by his criticism of Islamism, a pattern he documented in videos that now serve as chilling foreshadowing of his fate.

 The Fatal Attack

The tragedy unfolded around 10:30 p.m. on September 10 near Sarnaya’s apartment at 53 Rue Sergent Michel Berthet in Lyon’s working-class Gorge de Loup neighborhood. According to witnesses, a lone assailant—or possibly a group of three hooded figures dressed in black, as some conflicting reports suggest—ambushed Sarnaya as he returned home from an evening outing. Sarnaya was livestreaming at the time, delivering a heartfelt devotion to his TikTok audience, when the attacker struck, slashing his carotid artery with a bladed weapon, described variably as a knife or machete.

The livestream captured the attack in graphic detail: Sarnaya’s sudden cry, the glint of the blade, and his collapse in his wheelchair as blood poured from his neck. Viewers watching in real-time were horrified, with some alerting his sister, who was shopping nearby. “I came home, and my phone was full of missed calls from friends,” she recounted to local media, her voice heavy with grief. “They told me to check on Ashur. When I got there, he was already gone... He was just a normal person, spreading the word of God.” Despite the rapid response of emergency services, Sarnaya succumbed to cardiorespiratory arrest at the scene.

The video, which remained online briefly before being removed by TikTok, went viral, amplifying the tragedy’s impact. Clips circulated on platforms like X, where users expressed shock and sorrow, juxtaposing Sarnaya’s final moments with earlier videos of him singing hymns with quiet joy.

 Investigation and Unanswered Questions

French authorities have launched a full-scale murder investigation, with the case handed to the National Directorate for the Judicial Police (DNPJ), a unit specializing in complex crimes, including terrorism and organized crime. Lyon’s deputy security chief, Mohamed Chihi, condemned the “heinous crime” and promised a thorough probe to uncover the motive and circumstances. As of September 21, no arrests have been made, and investigators are exploring multiple angles, including religious extremism, personal vendettas, or potential links to local criminal activity, such as drug-related violence.

The lack of clarity has fueled speculation, particularly given Sarnaya’s history of receiving threats tied to his faith-based activism. Authorities have access to the livestream footage and are analyzing it alongside CCTV recordings from the area, though no official suspect description has been released. The ambiguity surrounding the number of attackers—whether one or three—has complicated early efforts to reconstruct the crime.

 A Community in Mourning

Sarnaya’s death has devastated France’s Iraqi Christian community, part of an estimated 50,000 refugees who fled ISIS’s atrocities in Iraq and Syria. Lyon, home to a significant Chaldean and Assyrian diaspora, has been a haven for many, with its diocese maintaining a formal “twinning” with the Chaldean Archeparchy of Mosul since 2014. Archbishop Olivier de Germay expressed profound sorrow, calling for prayers and solidarity with the bereaved community.

Catholic organizations have been vocal in their response. Œuvre d’Orient, a French aid group supporting Middle Eastern Christians, condemned the murder of a man “in a vulnerable situation” and demanded justice to ensure religious minorities can practice their faith without fear. SOS Chrétiens d’Orient called Sarnaya’s killing a “martyrdom” and urged French society to rally against such violence, stating, “It is unimaginable that a Christian who fled persecution should be murdered in France.”

 Political and Social Fallout

The murder has inflamed France’s already tense discourse on immigration, religion, and security. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen seized on the tragedy, asserting that Sarnaya was “savagely stabbed to death by an Islamist” and blaming France’s “unlimited and uncontrolled” immigration policies for allowing “persecutors” to follow refugees to Europe. Her comments, echoed by other conservative figures, have drawn criticism for preempting the investigation’s findings but reflect a growing unease among some quarters about integration and safety.

Advocacy groups like the Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe (OIDAC) highlighted a broader trend, noting 401 documented anti-Christian attacks in France in 2025 alone, including vandalism, assaults, and threats. They called on European governments to ensure “safe havens” for religious minorities, particularly converts and exiles fleeing persecution.

On social media, hashtags like #AshurSarnaya and #JusticeForAshur trended on X, with users decrying the lack of mainstream media coverage and labeling the incident a “modern martyrdom.” One widely shared post read: “Ashur sang of God’s love and was killed for it. Where is the outrage?” alongside montages of his joyful videos contrasted with the grim livestream.

 A Call for Justice

As Lyon mourns, Sarnaya’s sister remains a poignant figure, embodying the pain of a family and community shattered by loss. “He lived for his faith,” she said, clutching a rosary at a small vigil outside their apartment. “He wanted to share peace, not hate.”

The investigation continues, with pressure mounting for answers. Sarnaya’s death underscores the precarious existence of religious minorities, even in nations offering refuge. For France, it is a stark reminder of the challenges in balancing free expression, security, and social cohesion in an era of global migration and rising tensions. As tributes pour in, the world watches to see whether justice will be served for Ashur Sarnaya, a man whose voice was silenced but whose message endures.
