Nizamabad, February 16, 2026 — A controversy erupted during the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation's mayoral election process when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dharmapuri Arvind allegedly used abusive language, including calling a policeman "stupid," leading to the registration of a criminal case against him.

The incident occurred on February 11, 2026, amid the municipal elections and subsequent mayoral polling in Nizamabad, Telangana. Dharmapuri Arvind, the sitting MP from Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency, reportedly arrived at a polling station set up at Haricharan Marwadi School. As an ex-officio member or in connection with the electoral process, tensions escalated when he allegedly entered the polling booth unlawfully, intimidated election staff and police personnel on duty, and hurled expletives and derogatory remarks.

According to police sources and multiple media reports, a video that went viral on social media captured the MP using threatening and abusive language toward officers, including referring to one as "stupid." Complaints were lodged by Sub-Inspector Gurra Narayana, Head Constable Govardhan, other polling personnel, and Srinivasulu.

Based on these complaints, the I Town Police Station in Nizamabad registered a case (Crime No. 51/26) against Dharmapuri Arvind and a few others. The charges include sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty), 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant), and 296(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions under Section 226 of the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.

The Telangana police and election officials have emphasized zero tolerance for any intimidation or misconduct toward personnel on election duty. State DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy issued a statement warning of stringent action against anyone indulging in violence, abuse, or obstruction during the electoral process.

The episode unfolded against the backdrop of a closely contested municipal election in Nizamabad, where the BJP has accused the ruling Congress of misusing administrative machinery to influence the mayoral outcome following a hung verdict in the corporation. Dharmapuri Arvind, known for his outspoken style, has been vocal in criticizing the Congress government over the handling of the polls.

As of now, the investigation is underway, and no arrests have been reported in connection with the case. Political circles in Telangana see this as part of the ongoing friction between the BJP and the Congress-led state administration ahead of key local body proceedings.

The Nizamabad Mayor Poll continues to draw attention, with parties trading allegations of irregularities and misuse of power. Authorities have urged all stakeholders to maintain decorum to ensure the integrity of the democratic process. Further developments are awaited as the police probe progresses.
