Car owners are being forced to part with their beloved vehicles after Delhi government's new order banning refuelling of aging vehicles. Diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol ones older than 15 years will not be allowed to refuel in the national capital - and it's making owners sell their cars at "throwaway prices." The ban, initiated by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in a bid to curb air pollution, took effect on July 1.

Ritesh Gandotra is one individual who shared his pain of selling his Range Rover. In a post on X, Gandotra revealed that his diesel car is in its 8th year and at least 2 lakh km of life left."But thanks to the 10-year diesel ban in NCR, I'm now forced to sell it — and that too to buyers outside NCR, offering throwaway prices. To make it worse, buying a new one comes with 45% GST + cess. This isn't green policy. It's a penalty on responsible ownership and common sense," he posted.Varun Vij, an owner of Mercedes-Benz ML350, has sold his car he bought for Rs 84 lakh in 2015 for just Rs 2.5 lakh. According to News18, Vij said that his car held a sentimental value in his family and was in excellent condition. He revealed the car had logged in just 1.35 lakh kilometres and needed minimal maintenance work despite being a decade old.

Owing to the new rule, Vij said he has bought an electric vehicle for Rs 62 lakh which he intends to use for at least 20 years. My friend from Delhi just called me he was crying. Today his 10 year old diesel car, loved like a family member, is banned. No fuel. No mercy," the user posted. "Cameras will scan it, fines will fall, it could be towed like trash. He maintained it like his own blood. That car carried their childhood, their memories, their father’s last ride. And today, it’s illegal. Delhi killed a part of their family today."

Estimates suggest there are 6.2 million such vehicles that will not be allowed to refuelled in Delhi. According to Times of India, 380 teams from the transport department, MCD and Delhi traffic police have been formed to enforce the new rules at around 400 petrol pumps. Notably, the vehicles violating the rules will be impounded and fines will be imposed on the owners under RVSF rules and section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
